North Korea Demands UN sanctions be lifted (1 Viewer)

f its demands aren't met, the North said it would increase its nuclear deterrent, according to the summary. The U.S. offered in its opening comments to normalize relations with North Korea, but only after it halted its nuclear program.

That's good, what I always want to hear.We get a lot out of diplomacy with NK.Good thing places like Syria and Iran would be much different.

(Note the sarcasm)

N. Korea has always made a strong opening statement at the onset of any International talks, it was expected.

What did you expect them to say? something along the lines of ' Please increase the severity of Sanctions' perhaps?

(note the sarcasm.)

Let's ignore them. They're bluffing all the nuclear crap anyway.

No it's not the fact of "wow I can't beleive they said that, totaly unexpected" it's just a little buit more proof that sometimes talking to countries that outright dislikes us and are willing to break international treaties and defy anything said to them should not be communicated with at all.And honestly with Irans President being the way he is, saying what he has said, he's not much different from Kim Jong.

If we did not communicate with any Country, regardless of whether they express hatred for us and our political system, perhaps you can suggest another way in which we can get them to agree with us that their actions are disquieting.

So please do let us know what your alternative is to getting agreement with such Country's.

Well, I think it has to be on a case by case basis. And with NK, we should just say **** 'em.

They hang their alleged nuclear program over our heads as leverage. Personally, I think it's all a hoax.

Here is how you "negotiate" with *******s like NK.

(1) They are not allowed to make any demands
(2) The first time they make threats, "negotiations" are over
(3) If NK would like anything at all from us, they must meet all of our demands in a verifiable way.

NK has nothing we need. We have stuff they want. Their little nuclear blackmail game should end. It’s ridiculous.

Making surgical strikes on their launching pads.

Whats your solution?? I'd like to hear.........

And there are STILL people that think we dont need a NMD...

The reason why diplomacy is so nice, is that the penalties for failure are rather small. I agree it is rather unlikely that Kim will suddenly decide to disarm, de-militarize and act nicely just because of some diplomatic speech. But if he doesn't, it doesn't cost anything. The problem with war, is that if it doesn't work you get many many people killed. Even if it does, you have to spend a lot of money.

Ummm, no. The penalty for failure is a world where there are more nuclear weapons, and that the proliferation of these weapons is not taken seriously by the international community, so more countries looking to blackmail their way into the nuclear arms market continue their processes to build nuclear weapons, which creates fear and instability in their affected regions. All it would take is one nuke to go off, and then people would start asking why we didn't stop this from happening.

Two words:

How exactly would war have stopped nuclear proliferation? The SALT treaties were fairly effective in reducing nuclear power.

Neville Chamberlain

Diplomacy is like trying to talk down a drunken idiot before he hurts someone. You start off trying to be reasonable but if the idiot punches someone, you take him down. Chamberlain was an idiot who didn't realize that if the other guy if hellbent on war, than you better fight back. NK has no intention or ability to invading the U.S., so the situation is slightly different.

Yeah, between Russia and the US. Hasn't exactly stalled other countries from seeking nuclear weaponry. And we see how far diplomacy got us with Pakistan and their nuclear program. That show of weakness emboldened NK, and now Iran to go ahead and pursue nuclear weapons IMO. I am not talking about launching invasions, but some percision military airstrikes on nuclear facilities and/or launching pads for ICBMs might be a more forceful deterrent.
