The Senate will consider substituted language for HB 589 on Tuesday afternoon. Among the dozens of changes, these are the most onerous for North Carolina voters:
  • Implementing a strict voter ID requirement that bars citizens who don’t have a proper photo ID from casting a ballot.
  • Eliminating same-day voter registration, which allowed residents to register at the polls.
  • Cutting early voting by a full week.
  • Increasing the influence of money in elections by raising the maximum campaign contribution to $5,000 and increasing the limit every two years.
  • Making it easier for voter suppression groups like True The Vote to challenge any voterwho they think may be ineligible by requiring that challengers simply be registered in the same county, rather than precinct, of those they challenge.
  • Vastly increasing the number of “poll observers” and increasing what they’re permitted to do. In 2012, ThinkProgress caught the Romney campaign training such poll observers using highly misleading information.
  • Only permitting citizens to vote in their specific precinct, rather than casting a ballot in any nearby ward or election district. This can lead to widespread confusion, particularly in urban areas where many precincts can often be housed in the same building.
  • Barring young adults from pre-registering as 16- and 17-year-olds, which is permitted by current law, and repealing a state directive that high schools conduct voter registration drives in order to boost turnout among young voters.
  • Prohibiting some types of paid voter registration drives, which tend to register poor and minority citizens.
  • Dismantling three state public financing programs, including the landmark program that funded judicial elections.
  • Weakening disclosure requirements for outside spending groups.
  • Preventing counties from extending polling hours in the event of long lines or other extraordinary circumstances and making it more difficult for them to accommodate elderly or disabled voters with satellite polling sites at nursing homes, for instance.

Nothing to see here, move along... Right? Yea right. This is suppression and this is trying to suppress a certain demographic who usually votes the other way than "r". What are the point of these laws? I dont understand. Fraud is not a problem in the US. This is all about suppressing a voter base, and making elections more and more "bought". Sickening that "democracy" in some parts of the country are moving this way.

How exactly does this suppress the vote?

It appears that all one has to do is register and then vote on the proper day during the proper hours. That doesn't seem too difficult.

yeah because that nursing home demographic really swings elections for the dems

1.)Must have ID
2.)Elimintate same day voter registration (whats the point of that?)
3.)Cut early voting (whats the point of that?)
4.)Increase # of "poll observers"
5.)Barring young adults from pre-registering as 16- and 17-year-olds
6.)Prohibit some voter registration drives.
7.)Prevent counties from extending poll hours.

Register and vote. That's all you have to do.

I don't see anything to suggest that a "certain demographic" is being targeted....

Unless of course you always automatically assume that only minorities are so poor they can't afford an ID card, only minorities vote early, only minorities are subject to "poll observers" (because lets be honest, would ThinkProgress be bothered to CATCH Democrat candidates doing anything wrong here?) and so on.

Your going to have to explain to me why this is targeting minorities.... or as you put it "certain demographics"

You really have no idea what the other side's arguments are, do you?

The only one of the bullets from the OP that bothers me is the last one about keeping the polls open due to long lines, and the nursing home part of that last bullet as well.

But that has NOTHING to do with one demographic or another.....

Register and vote. That's all you have to do.

That doesnt answer like any moer my questions or relates to many of the points i made. But still is suppresses registration by baring young adults, prohibiting some registration drives.

1.)Why would anyone be against having to prove who they are?
2.)Local elections generally have a residency requirement
3.)There is an election DAY for a reason
4.)Do you equally object to the NSA's surveillance?
5.)Why should someone be able to pre-register as they do not meet current requirements?
6.)No contention
7.)If you do not make it to the line in time, too bad

Is this the same NC that is in that make believe place made up by the NYT, "The New South" ?......................

16 and 17 year olds shouldn't be registered to vote anyways.....

You've most certainly struck a nerve. All the most severe cases of optical rectumitis have chosen to turn the blinking light on their forehead on. Wowser, regular dog and pony show.

Still waiting for an explanation of how this is "voter suppression".....

1.)Why would anyone be against having to prove who they are?
Unless provided by the state for free it can be considered a "poll tax".

2.)Local elections generally have a residency requirement
So you cant just register on the same day? Why restriction registration on the same day?

3.)There is an election DAY for a reason
So your against early voting all around?

4.)Do you equally object to the NSA's surveillance?
Yes...

5.)Why should someone be able to pre-register as they do not meet current requirements?
Because from my understanding they will be legal voting age at the time of the elction.

7.)If you do not make it to the line in time, too bad
Yay! More Flordias!

If you don't like the rules, too bad, but there is no suppression, just some common sense being returned to our election process...

If you don't like the rules, too bad,
Ok... So we are going to end this on this not. You dont like the rules... Sucks! I thought this was debate politics not "oh these are the rules".

but there is no suppression, just some common sense being returned to our election process...
So what was the point of these laws? Was there a voter fraud problem?
And anything to respond on any of the points or questions i asked or made?

Right.................

The foundation our country is built on is a fair voting process. I have no problem with rules to keep us from having a corrupt voting process like so many countries do.

Do we have that? Is there a problem with "voter fraud"? Was our electoral process when a person proceeds in the act of voting "unfair" before this law?

How exactly does this suppress the vote?

You mean extremely long voter lines don't exist?

Since there has been no real enforcement we don't know how much voter fraud there has been . You shut the barn door BEFORE the horses get out not after.

It appears that you only favor the rules with which you're in agreement. Fraud is extremely difficult to detect given how lax current voting laws are. We have a set election day, not an election month, and there is no reason a child should be able to register to vote until he/she meets all the requirements for registration. When you want to have a debate, let me know, but simply spouting your contempt for proposed legislation does not make for a good debate...
