WASHINGTON -- The Republican-controlled North Carolina House pushed through anti-abortion legislation on Thursday, using as their vehicle a motorcycle safety bill that lawmakers had stealthily turned into a measure on abortion.
The legislation (S.B. 353) would bar so-called sex-selective abortions and impose additional regulations on abortion clinics. Public employees and individuals who obtain health coverage through the federal health care law's new public exchanges would also not have access to a plan that includes abortion coverage.

Republicans introduced the legislation in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday morning by attaching the abortion provisions to a motorcycle safety bill -- without first notifying either the public or their Democratic colleagues.
The House version tweaked a similar measure passed by the Senate -- which itself had been tacked onto a bill banning Sharia law -- and was meant to address some concerns raised by the administration of Gov. Pat McCrory (R), who had threatened to veto the Senate bill.

You know you're arguments are pretty weak against abortion when you are trying to sneak it through on a "motorcycle safety bill".

This bill is EVERYTHING that is wrong with the legislative process... Riders like these are a farce.
This should have been THREE bills.

1) Increased penalties for reckless behavior resulting in motorcycle injuries/death.
2) Outlawing abortions where the sex of the potential child is the deciding factor.
3) Making federal insurance plans exempt from abortion coverage.

Let them be decided on their own merits.

Lets be clear. This is a NC bill, not a Federal bill. The strategy is used by both however.

Usually, special tax breaks sneak in on the underside of most legislation. I'm sure this stupid trick has been tried many times before in regard to abortion. It just illustrates what kind of creepy people become politicians.

It's just one lunatic party appealing to their base. The law itself will probably not be implemented but million will be paid to lawyers that are friends of politicians to fight it. What a bunch of scumbags our politicians ar. No interest in their citizens, everything is for selfish profit.

I agree with you. In that there are 3 different issues here.

1) I don't know what the penalties are now but increasing them won't change anything. You can't legislate stupidity into compliance. Otherwise we would have no murders.

2) How useless would that law be? Who would tell anybody that was their reason? The chances of this occurring are slim anyway. I doubt that many abortions happen because you really wanted a girl and your fetus is male. In America anyway. The Chinese have a limit - we don't. So this is lawmaking for the sake of lawmaking, not for any useful purpose.

3) I doubt that a State can make a law that applies to the Federal Government. If they could....it would be very interesting I'm sure...but it's not possible.

They could have made a better investment of their efforts, that's for sure.

1. I agree.

2. I also think that is pretty useless. As you said who would say they want to abort because of the sex of the fetus.
There might be a case where the fetus has Fragile X syndrome so they want to abort because of the genetically abnormality and some pro life person might claim it was because the fetus is/ was a boy ( girls can have Fragile X also but since girls have two X chromosomes the symptoms and mental disabilities are less less severe in girls than boys.

Also since the sex cannot be determined until about 20 weeks and doctors will rarely abort a fetus at or after 20 weeks unless the fetus has a genetic deformity or the woman's life or long term health will be majorly affected.

3. I never heard of a state law that applies to federal government either.

it kind of shows how desperatly out of touch the NC house is with the issue at hand. They took a motercycle safety bill and attach anti-abortion riders onto the bill. all because the north carliona governor promised to veto the shiria law banning bill that also had anti abortion riders on it.

is'nt true that the NC speaker of the house a candidate for the republican senate primary to try unseat Kay Hagen?
