Olaf the Bundeskanzler has just pulled the plug on Nord Stream 2. And as @Tangmo puts it: the baby was stillborn, the bear struggled but in vain. It was an increasingly long shot. If Olaf did not pull the plug the Green Frau was waiting in the wings like some abortionist to deliver fatal stab.

What is the natural next step? And this brings to the forefront a disconnect that till now is not addressed? The other pipelines. Mind you the Russian Federation is not pumping gas through Nord Stream 2 yet. So this is not a reduction of gas from Russia. Nor as yet a curb on any increase in gas deliveries to Europe by Russia if it chooses to. The pipelines through Ukraine are still there. With vast unused capacities.

And how safe from sabotage are the pipelines through Ukraine ?

True. The transition was weak. A vulnerable dependency emerged between fossil to renewable transition

Good, maybe we now have averted a major environmental disaster in the Baltic Sea... well there is still Nord Stream 1.

Your priority is the environment when we talking war and peace? You are green to the core. :)

Why did PUTIN go to China last week? (See here) To arrange for oil to be pumped into Russia.

But China doesn't have that much oil to spare ...

Those pipelines may soon belong to Putin if we don't take serious economic action. It may be too late, already.

Russia has some oil, but not enough to cover their needs (which is funny considering they export oil). So yes, Russia do need to import oil, and does it. China is in a similar situation, they have some domestic oil, but they don't have enough and thus also imports alot.

Russia exports its gas to Europe. So, the gas pays for the imports of oil to Russia.

Kinda-sorta-crazy isn't i?

Anyway that northern gas line is history. The US is increasing its gas exports across the Atlantic to Europe to replace it!

Wow! That must be one helluva long pipe-line ... !

Russia exports oil, so I am not sure why they would be importing oil from China unless it is a geographic thing.
Export value of crude oil from Russia from 2000 to 2021
