The death toll has risen as emergency workers go through the scene. Ifeanyi Nnaji of the National Emergency Management Agency told BBC Igbo that the number killed now stood at 109.

Absolutely tragic. :(
According to the article, this isn't the first time either.

"An illegal 'oil refinery'"?

It's not a still in some backwoods; how the hey do they hide it?

That is just so sad.

Nigeria is a huge country and the people of the Delta provinces have not been allowed to benefit from the resources in their own state. This leads them to create micro-refineries as oil is literally oozing from the ground in some areas. They don't have the technical resources of the huge multinationals and have to learn safety the hard way.
Same as it would have been in the old Texas oil rich days.

Bribery will be a factor but local resentment against outsiders from other states and nations coming in and pondering resources so there will be local resistance to telling people that such facilities exist.
