And I think we're not in the basement. oldreliable, don't call aps obtuse, it's rude. aps, don't call oldreliable an a$$, not only is it flaming and against the rules, it's childish.

If I have to tell you two again, you'll be sitting in a corner.

I kind of like it when you get rough with me. ;)

Who said he was dead?

If the info is released there is no going back. Same difference.

Um...the article in which they revealed the classified information at issue here is publicly accessible.

Whoops.. Sorry, I got my NYT threads confused. :2razz:

This is the thread to debate the NY Times needlessly revealing the inner-workings of a classified anti-terror program on.

If you want to debate the NY Times calling terrorists to let them know the FBI was about to raid them, go to "New York Times Directly Aided The Enemy" thread.

Borrowing from you're rationals.
Have any charges been brought against the NYT?
Any indicments sent down?
Nope, move on.

How dare a newspaper print the truth! Off with their heads I say.

Treason!!!!

I agree. Lets see them charged or move on.
I doubt it will happen warranted or not. Free speech and all.

I'm not sure if I posted this article by the NYT and the Los Angeles Times previously, but I thought that their explanation in when they publish a secret was extremely well reasoned. It still stuns me to think of the number of people on this message board who think that they committed treason.

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion...jul01,0,4783385.story?coll=la-home-commentary

As correctly pointed out by Bill Keller and Dean Baquet (the editors of the NYT and LATimes, respectively), this is a battle that has been going on for years. The Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that the NYT could constitutionally publish the Pentagon Papers, which had been illegally copied and provided to the press. The SC found that the First Amendment allowed them that right. This case isn't any different. Sure you can agree with the 3 justices who voted against the First Amendment in that case.

This "war on terror" is not unique, and I am sick and tired of this administration claiming "national security" at every turn. Give me a break. We are a free society, and we should all be able to make decisions on what our government is doing, even if we agree with the eavesdropping and financial transactions. We should have that right to make that kind of determination.

Keller and Baquet pointed out how in September 2003, John Snow had invited a group of reporters to travel with him and his aids "on a military aircraft for a six-day tour to show off the department's efforts to track terror financing." they noted that Snow discussed "many sensitive details of their monitoring efforts" to show how tough they are on terrorism. However, after the publishing of the article on financing, suddenly Snow was "scandalized." Oh brother.

I am so thankful that newspapers like the NYT exist. The secrecy of this administration is sickening.

:bs

Yeah, how dare Bush keep secrets on how we track terror-funding. The NY Times is doing a public service by needlessly revealing the inner-workings of a classified counter-terrorism program.

I wonder if you would be saying this if Bill Clinton was doing this. I am guessing not.

Actually, the reason many conservatives have turned on Bush is because our principles remain the same no matter who is in office. If there was such a thing as a Democrat who would lift a finger to protect this country I would gladly attack the crap out of any newspaper that undermined their efforts. The only Democrats I can think of who have seriously supported defending this country when the chips are down (hence, the only ones I have supported) are pretend Democrats like Lieberman and Miller.

I've never checked it out, but I know liberal character assassins went after him immediately and harshly with all kinds of personal attacks.

But I doubt he was wrong to sound the alarm over such an over the top liberal extremist like Kerry wanting to take over the military in a time of war.

That guy's voting record was appalling.

But anyway, we are supposed to be discussing the NY Times...
