New York City’s lockdown in the spring reduced the spread of the novel coronavirus by 70 percent, but more consistency with mask-wearing would have brought it down even further in the city that was nonetheless ravaged by covid-19. This is the assessment of a forthcoming study from Columbia University and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Meanwhile, a federal judge appointed by President Trump delivered a blow to Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor Monday, ruling that shutdown orders intended to stop the spread of covid-19 were unconstitutional. Trump celebrated the decision.
