Bogus Greenpeace claim that lost Russian polar bear is evidence of climate change

Another day, another bogus starving polar bear claim from an environmental organization. Polar bear starvation is virtually never caused by climate change but apparently, Greenpeace thinks there are still some gullible folks out there who will believe anything they are told. A young male polar bear in poor condition found far south on the Russian coast of the Bering Sea a few days ago is an isolated incident: it is not evidence of anything except the sad fact that the life of a polar bear can sometimes be brutal. In contrast to these reports, Chukchi Sea polar bears are doing extremely well overall.

Greenpeace lied about DR. Moore being a Founding member.

Greenpeace rakes in over $300 million a year.

Great.

Now we have two posters spamming WUWT links.

Polar Bears: Which Narrative to Believe?

May 1, 2019

EXCERPT:

Originally published May 1, 2019 in the Pacifica Tribune column What’s Natural by Jim Steele, republished here by request of the author.

When polar bear expert Mitch Taylor modeled populations in the Baffin Bay region (west of Greenland) in the 1980s, he estimated between 300 and 600 bears. Inuit hunters protested his estimates were far too low, and Baffin Bay’s hunting quotas far too small. So, Taylor and Inuit hunters sat together in “kappiananngittuq” to discuss their disagreements. The Inuit pointed out he surveyed during a time and in a place that overlooked a large portion of the population. Naturally, models driven by poor data always fail to model reality.

To Taylor’s credit, he redesigned his surveys based on hunters’ recommendations. The new survey tripled population estimates to over 2000 bears. Although a trend in the bear population could not be determined, it has been universally agreed that since the 1974 International Agreement for the Conservation of Polar Bears, polar bear populations were increasing due to better hunting regulations.

Yes.

National Geographic and Scientific American are well known propaganda sites. [emoji849]

National Geographic has certainly given itself over to propaganda, again.

[h=2]More starving polar bear nonsense from National Geographic & a better video to watch[/h]Posted on May 6, 2019 | Comments Offon More starving polar bear nonsense from National Geographic & a better video to watch
This time National Geographic’s ‘Hostile Planet’ series laughably claims a fat polar bear that’s caught a beluga calf off the coast of Western Hudson Bay has been saved from starvation! The message: here is a prime example of climate change pushing a species to its limit. This is nonsense, of course: polar bears hunting beluga whales from rocks has nothing to do with climate change or desperately hungry bears. More importantly, there is a much better video of the action that is both more informative and truthful.

Now 20 years with no trend in ice breakup dates for Western Hudson Bay polar bears

Posted on June 26, 2019

Excerpt:

Straight from the horse’s mouth: all polar bear females tagged by researchers around Churchill in Western Hudson Bay last year were still on the ice as of 25 June. With plenty of ice still remaining over the bay, spring breakup will be no earlier this year than it has been since 1999. Contrary to predictions of ever-declining ice cover, the lack of a trend in sea ice breakup dates for Western Hudson Bay is now twenty years long (a hiatus, if you will) and yet these bears are repeatedly claimed to have been seriously harmed in recent years by a loss of sea ice.

I am too busy being a science illiterate, to notice that the article has over EIGHTY references to published papers to back up the article.

Meanwhile your predictable comment about Dr. Crockford who has a PHD ZOOLOGY degree and 35 years of research on various animals, including Polar Bears is a disrespectful smear. That is all you ever do despite that you have not once tried to make a cogent rebuttal to her articles, just the usual brave smears is all you go for.

Try new material, you have become boring.

It’s well known she’s an amateur in the area of polar bear populations. Her less than impressive resumé on her area of expertise- the evolution of dogs - only translates to ‘polar bear expert’ among deniers who think putting a long lost of references on a blog post somehow constitutes cutting edge science.

Interesting that the Inuits who live in the region thinks Polar Bears are doing good and even too many in some places.

New Research Finds Polar Bear Numbers Up 42% Since 2004 – Survival Rates Unaffected By Sea Ice Availability

By Kenneth Richard on 12. March 2018

SELECTED EXCERPT:

The native Inuit peoples who have lived in the Arctic and observed polar bear hunting practices for generations are apparently deserving of the “climate-change denier” moniker.
For that matter, the audacious scientists who risk the ire of the AGW gatekeepers to interview these community leaders and then publish their results in scientific journals apparently must be classified as “climate-change deniers” too.

Why? Because there appears to be widespread agreement among Inuit observers that polar bears are skilled swimmers who can catch seals in open water (and not just from sea ice surfaces). This observation wholly contradicts the “well established” and “overwhelming” scientific evidence identified in Harvey et al. (2017) that says polar bears can only catch seals from a sea ice platform.
“The [native populations’] view of polar bears as effective open-water hunters is not consistent with the Western scientific understanding that bears rely on the sea ice platform for catching prey (Stirling and McEwan, 1975; Smith, 1980). The implications of this disagreement are paramount, given that scientists suggest that the greatest threat to polar bears associated with a decrease in sea ice is a significant decrease in access to marine mammal prey (Stirling and Derocher, 1993; Derocher et al., 2004).” — Laforest et al., 2018

‘There’s Too Many Polar Bears Now’
Not only do the generational observations indicate that polar bears’ hunting practices are not duly harmed by sea ice reduction, but community participants consistently report thriving and growing polar bear populations — especially in recent years.

An extensive analysis by York et al. (2016), relying heavily on native reports, concluded that 12 of 13 Canadian Arctic sub-populations have been stable or growing in recent decades. Wong et al. (2017) recorded Inuit community members reporting “there’s too many polar bears now.”

Even aerial analysis has revealed stable to growing polar bear populations across wide swaths of the Arctic. Aars et al. (2017), for example, report that there is “no evidence” that reduced sea ice has led to a reduction in polar bear population size. To the contrary, these scientists found that polar bears living near the Barents Sea increased in number by 42% — from 685 to 973 — between 2004 and 2015.

So climate change isn't happening and inuits are climate deniers because it turns out polar bears can swim and hunt.

How did they make that observation if the ice were not in fact melting. hmmm, hmmmm, I wonder...

Are polar bears some magical animal that keeps the world from catching on fire? Didn't realize their continued existence somehow is what's stopping super storms and flooding on the coasts, and droughts inland.

Or are you confusing some wildlife scientists concerned what a climate scientist is saying will affect the animals he studies as a climate scientist. And thus by extensions their observations that bears hunt on the ice being wrong invalidates 97 percent of the climate scientists worldwide.

If so, that's a stretch.

A person who studies polar bears is not a climate scientist. Asking a biologist about climate is stupid. They take findings from climate scientists and try to correlate what they are observing. They then have other people check those observations and prove them wrong, that's how science works. It could very well be, these current findings will be invalidated when the methodology is put to the test.

This victory march of ignorance over climate change being false because of polar bears able to swim when the ice melts. Is well pretty ****ing ignorant.

Still no rebuttal against her article, which I presume you KNOW you don't have one, because you KNOW you have no counterarguments to offer.

Since you make clear that you didn't read the article, where Dr. Crockford a ZOOLOGIST (PHD) using those 80+ plus science references, some which are from Dr. Armstrup and other Polar Bear researchers to make the article you didn't read at all.

Since you show to everyone how science illiterate you are, which is why you troll against Dr. Crockford over and over because that is all you can do. Smearing people doesn't help you here since that is what science illiterates do, be irrational and have no argument to offer is the best you ever do against Dr. Crockford.

Your reply makes clear you don't know Dr. Crockford well since she has been confining her articles to Polar Bears, their Health and population numbers, with a small side of Walrus and Seals, very little else on her blog. You chose to be ignorant that way because you didn't look through her blog in the first place, which means you spoke from ignorance from the start.

Polar Bear - Ursus maritimus They are natural swimmers and been found going 60-400 miles in swimming in the frigid waters.

Long-distance swimming by polar bears (Ursus maritimus) of the southern Beaufort Sea during years of extensive open water

Excerpt:

We used movement data from 52 adult female polar bears wearing Global Positioning System (GPS) collars, including some with dependent young, to document long-distance swimming (>50 km) by polar bears in the southern Beaufort and Chukchi seas. During 6 years (2004–2009), we identified 50 long-distance swims by 20 bears. Swim duration and distance ranged from 0.7 to 9.7 days (mean = 3.4 days) and 53.7 to 687.1 km (mean = 154.2 km), respectively.

Your ignorance comes from ignoring their life cycle since LOW Summer Ice cover is not significant factor in their prey availability. There have been periods of far lower to NO Summer ice at all for hundreds of years at a time in the early Holocene time, yet they survived anyway despite CO2 being around the 240-260 ppm at the time.

Since the stabilized Sea Ice cover in the Summer has remained about the same since 2007, Polar Bears manage to increase their population anyway in part because they have eaten most of their calories for the year by mid July long before Sea Ice has broken up significantly. The rest of the year they are meat scavengers who eat some berries and plants while they move long distances for carcasses and the rare meal of a live animal.
