anyone here good at networking?

mine is currently set up like this:

internet-->westell DSL modem/router-->d-link wireless router-->2 computers

my ISP is AOL/verison

every 10 minutes or so, the westell modem/router stops connecting to the DNS. I know its not the wireless router because the problem is the same whether the computer is connected to the d-link or directly to the westell. I have to go restart it in order to connect again.

sometimes, it also wont allow me to log into the westell itself to make modifications. I'll only be able to reach the d-link.

The DNS server of the westell is myhome.westell.com by default. I tried changing it to the openDNS (208.67.222.222) but that didn't fix the problem.

I have some port farwarding configured, but other than that everything is running on its default settings.

anyone have any idea what might be going on?

I'm pretty good at networking. Set up nearly the exact configuration you have for my job, including the loathsome westel modem. First, have you done a modem reset? Follow this proceedure in the following order:

1. unplug modem
2. unplug router
3. Shut down computer.
4. Wait 5 minutes
5. replug modem...wait for both the power and DSL lights to stay green
6. replug router...wait for all lights to be on and the ethernet light on the modem to stay green
7. Restart computer

See if this helps.

If you've already done this, The modem/router may be releasing/renewing the IP address every 10 minutes. For some odd reason this is the default on some router/modems. You need to reset this either from the router or from your system.

Just occurred to me...have you called verizon?
