In another thread, I listed a number of h. sapiens needs as they pertain to our modern concept of civilization. Note that this is separate from the concept of rights and the US Constitution. That's another matter entirely. Rather, I was attempting to identify the minimum number of needs required to maintain our society in recognizable form. The assumption is that in order to provide these needs, we require government(s).

Here's my tentative list of 7: food, clothing, shelter, water, medical services, freedom from foreign/domestic attack and sanitation.

Please do comment.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.

Non-disabled folks are currently expected to work in order to provide food, clothing, shelter, utilities and other (private) goods/services for themselves and their dependents. The idea that the (federal?) government should (must?) provide these basic needs to everyone seems to be limited to the DSA plan (platform?).

No it isn't. Everyone who walks into a hospital can receive emergency medical care regardless of their ability to pay and we provide shelter and food for those without. The idea that we should care for fellow human beings, i.e. humanism, isn't regulated to socialists because no Republican is going to be elected into office advocating an end to the things I just mentioned. The difference between socialists and capitalists is that capitalists believe in providing the minimum, least they be seen as heartless.

I'd add access to the internet on to that list, oh, and public transportation.

Hi!

Thanks for taking the time to read my OP and respond.

The list I posted was, admittedly, basic. I would argue against my own list that sanitation is included as a part of medical services. Following that further, access to food, etc., includes the means to get there, either by shoe-leather freight or another means.

On the internet, I really don't know whether to say 'yea' or 'nay'. I did say 'modern, didn't I. Oh, well ...

Humans have desires and needs. How should those needs be met? By government handouts? I don't think so.
