BBC News - Nebraska city votes to bar hiring illegal immigrants

Quote(Voters in a city in the US state of Nebraska have backed a ban on local businesses and landlords hiring or renting to illegal immigrants.

About 57% of voters supported the move, which is likely to be the subject of a court challenge.)

If the report is accurate then it would seem that many more communities will seek a similar law to be passed in their locality.

President Obama seems to be sitting on his Immigration Bill, it really is about time something was put into place that solved this problem.

I for one think it just makes sense to not hire the ILLEGAL immigrants.

I would prefer we just make it much easier to immigrate into the US. New blood is not a bad thing. New blood that is off the record and can therefore be taken advantage of (hiring them for despicable wages that are way below minimum wage, and then being able to treat them harshly) and New Blood that can come in and out of the country committing crimes and getting away with it is a bad thing.

So I support this law very much so.

Interesting. This sort of thing doesn't usually get much traction. Business owners hire illegals because they work hard and for less money, it's good for business. If you want to reduce illegal immigration, you need to eliminate the reason they come here, by cracking down on their employers. You can beef up the border security and deport as many as you like, but in the end it will be just another war on drugs. The demand is there, the product will come, one way or another.

No they simply work for less money, period.

If you have a hole in a wall you plug the wall before trying to bail out the water. This isn't rocket science. Stop them at the source then you can concentrate on the ones already here and deport them as well but if you leave the hole open you will never gain the upper hand.

And no, not all come for jobs so lets not perpetuate that myth.

I am glad they enacted the law. This means cities and states doing something about illegal immigration will gain traction in other places. Hopefully they enforce it. What I would like to see is those who hire illegals being treated no different than drug dealers and other criminals who profit from illegal activities or use money to fund illegal activities. Make them subject to assets seizure and forfeiture laws and prison time for knowingly(this includes deliberately turning a blind eye by not verifying documents ) hiring illegals since they do profit from hiring illegals and by hiring illegals they are using their money for illegal activities.

Somebody's going start screaming racism, 'fore we know it. Enforcing this law isn't going to be any different than enforcing the Arizona law. Authorities will go into a workplace and pick on the hispanics and not question the white folks.

Does anyone know what sanctions there will be for violating this law? I don't have a problem at all with this approach to curbing illegal immigration, but without teeth, it's nothing more than empty political posturing.

Exactly if you dont kill the source, all it becomes is revolving door. Business shouldnt be just fined for having illegal workers, their should be a fine per illegal immigrant.

Farmer's Branch TX passed a law last year that made it illegal to rent to an illegal. A Federal judge declared the law unconstitutional. They are about to file an appeal with the 5th District Court. This NE law will likely follow the same path. What happens, especially in these times of economic woe, is that the Federal Courts can outspend the cities for legal services.

Except that, it is illegal to employ an illegal alien.

Bad analogies from both sides guys.

Yes, if we just work at securing the border its not going to do much. Some of the MAIN reasons people are coming in will still be present (jobs, services, etc) so the entire time you're working on securing that border (which will take time, especially if its a wall) you're having large amounts of people coming in and even afterwards there will be high reward to attempt to bypass that high risk of getting around it meaning attempts are still going to be high. Will it slow the influx? Yes. Will it stop it? No.

However...

If we JUST cut down on their ability to get jobs and services that also isn't going to be effective. There are still other benefits and reasons to come over illegally and still the chance of getting jobs and things under the table, and with a weak border the risk of actually coming into the country is relatively low. So will it slow the influx? Yes. Will it stop it? No.

The answer is a combination of those two FIRST...actual enforcement of laws AND protecting the border. Enforcement of laws could happen and begin in earnest tomorrow if need be, thus potentially slowing the flow of Illegals into the country while defense is ramped up. Once the border is secured and some of the major incentives are severely reduced then you have the double benefit of it being high risk to enter AND high risk to stay, doubling your chances of giving incentive and reason why NOT to illegally come into the country.

At that point you've slowed the flow of people coming into the country, you've hastened the flow of people voluntarily leaving the country, and you have a better way to monitor the coming and goings of people. Its at that point, when the security process has begun to be done and the enforcement process has been in place, that you begin to go into the secondary issues such as deportation or a path to citizenship, revisions of our general immigration law, looking into reforming or creating new temporary visas, etc.

Protect the Border and Remove the incentives, THEN tackle everything else. Do both of those first ones together and you have a FAR better chance at successfully doing it than if you do either of them singularly.

Agreed and there will be more loss of life while this sick political game is played out. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS destroying our economy, healthcare, legal, communities, etc while our elected government (BOTH useless Parties) sit on their collective asses and turn a blind eye

Prosecuting BP agents or citizens who step up to the plate to defend this country and at the same time defending, the cancer thats rotting the country...ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS getting a free pass

The above is a very reasoned piece, alas it totally ignores another reason why BOTH Parties sit on their collective asses and do nothing about the immigration problem.
The Birth rate in America is declining (actually this decline is happening throughout the world in many countries) so in order to keep population levels and one presumes Tax income at a reasonable level, these nations have to if not actually encourage immigration, then certainly turn a blind eye to it.
This decline is not entirely due to the rise of Homosexual populations, although that too does not help augment population growth, rather it is generally considered to be because of the high cost of raising children.
It could also be well argued that the Military in these Countries require fodder to replace those killed.

If the issue was truly population growth then that could easily be solved by increasing the number of immigrants allowed to LEGALY come into the United States every year.

There are reasons why politicians wish to keep the status quo, with some democrats realizing the more illegals coming in the more their argument for amnesty being "needed" is there and the more they bank on them voting democrat in gratitude for said amnesty while some republicans wanting more illegals in to provide big business with potentially cheaper labor. That said if it becomes a big enough hot button issue that it outweighs the positives for both sides then it won't matter much. However there's no much else we can do in regards to the nefarious desires of politicians.
