Still separated: Nearly 500 migrant children taken from their parents remain in U.S. custody

More than a month after a court deadline passed for the government to reunite families divided by President Trump’s border crackdown, nearly 500 children remain in U.S. government-funded shelters without their parents, according to court papers filed Thursday night.

60 Minutes did a story on this situation on Sunday. Trump's response:

.@60Minutes did a phony story about child separation when they know we had the exact same policy as the Obama Administration. In fact a picture of children in jails was used by other Fake Media to show how bad (cruel) we are, but it was in 2014 during O years. Obama separated....

No, Mr. President, the story is not phony, the children are still separated from their parents, many of whom have been sent home without their children, and no, the Obama administration did not separate children from their parents, that's a lie.

And no, this is not an acceptable situation. Keeping children here while sending their parents home? Is that the American way? Is it the platform if the "family values" party?

First, little hint. You do not need to wrap the color and font tags around each and every single sentence. If you're going to do the same font and color through out the whole post then simply put the beginning tag at the beginning of your post and the ending tag at the end of your post. Make life a bit easier for ya. ;)

As for the Obama admin...yes, actually they did separate children from their parents. Not to the extent that Trump has, but they did indeed do so. Simply google it and you'll see for yourself from reputable sources.

In point of fact parents have been sent back to their home country without their children for a very long time now. Even before Obama. Usually, if the parents where just here illegally they would be given the option of taking the children with them or leaving them here in the US with family members that were here legally. This usually applied when the child was born in the US. If there was more to it than simply being here illegally then the children would either be put in the foster care system or be sent to families that were here legally.

Sorry you don't like the way I've formatted the OP... no, actually I don't care. The formatting was copied and pasted along with the content.

Not only did the Trump Administration separate children from their parents, they lost track of which children belong to which parents. They have children in custody, but don't know where the parents even are.

The Obama Administration was confronted with unaccompanied minors crossing the border. The pictures of children in detention centers during that time were not of children forcibly taken away from parents and lost in the system, but of children who had fled from dangerous situations without their parents.

Once again, Trump is lying.

Isn't that what you lefty's want - for people to remain in the US? But, I am with you. The kids should be deported back to the countries where the parents are at. If the parents hadn't come here illegally then we wouldn't be in this situation. The problem is with the parents for wanting to break US laws. If they wanted to stay together as a family then they should have never tried to break into our country in the first place.

Many of those parents don't want their children back.

What do you propose Trump do? Drop them off at the airport in their country of origin and let them fend for themselves?

Most deported were criminals, and don't deserve their children back, hence the U.S. is responsible for making sure the children of these criminals best interests come first, but you also correct in saying some children were left behind purposely.

Part of the problem is with people coming across the border illegally, i.e., breaking US laws, as you said. The other part of the problem is that the children were taken away from the parents, and then the officials lost track of the parents. Sure, the kids should be sent back home to their parents. Let's do that, but then, let's not just dump them at the airport back home.

Though, I'm sure that Trump would have no problem just dumping them at the airport, or bus station, or wherever.

1. There's a statement you can't support.
2. I'm sure Trump would have no problem with that.

Even if when you copy/pasted the content it had copy/pasted the formatting (which it doesn't, I checked) it wouldn't have affected what you personally typed out.

Never disputed this.

I see you didn't even bother to use google. Read up on what happened after the Flores case.

We have to divert the discussion to the merits of Dittohead not!'s formatting choices? Seriously?

Well, since I already addressed this in a thread on the general subject, I'll just repeat myself on the differences re: Obama and Trump re: detention.

Indeed. In fact, it's worse than that.

Obama detained families together. So the first dishonesty by a huge section of the right on this subject is in their false claim that Trump is only doing what Obama did.

Obama was ordered to release the families by the court because he held them too long, violating the 1997 Flores Agreement. That is what resulted in the "catch and release" program for which dishonest persons on the right attacked him. They attacked him for respecting a constitutional branch of government. And they call themselves bigger patriots?

So that's the second bit of dishonesty.

The third bit is that the program Obama was implemented was extremely successful. There was electronic monitoring and assistance with getting people through the legal process of asylum seeking. The rate was over 90% - I want to say 96% - of those "released" people showing up in court. And of course, if the program was really so unwise, then why don't we hear a constant uproar from the right over the similarly highly successful use of electronic monitoring for released prisoners?

Well, the answer is yet again obvious: DISHONESTY

All in all, it's simply shameful. Trump ignored the same settlement Obama did, but on top ignored the Court order. Trump deliberately made the detentions far more traumatic. And now his defenders are going to spin and spin and spin to blame Obama. And if they can't do that, they'll instead divert the subject to whether "the left" is a fungible hypocrite for objecting to Trump's behavior or formatting or something, anything, as long as we aren't just talking about the subject of the 500 children detained due to Trump's uniquely awful policy.

Ridiculous.

What Trump did is aboslutely appalling no matter what one's views on illegal immigration are. Nobody who defends Trump has standing to say the slightest negative thing about any on the "left" relative to anything regarding immigration.

1. Good. I really don't care what you think of how my OP was formatted.

2. Good again. I hope you understand how vile that action was.

3. If you have an actual case in which a child, even one, was taken from a parent and then lost in the system with no one knowing where/who that parent is, then, by all means, post it. I'm not doing your homework for you.

And, if you have evidence of nearly 500 children, still in US custody with the parents' location unknown that started before Trump issued his zero tolerance order, then by all means, post that too.

1. There's a statement you can't support.

"This is not the United States taking children away with no plan to ever give them back to their parents," Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Tuesday.
The challenge is, some of those individuals are not their parents. Some of those individuals were traffickers claiming to be their parents. So they're doing DNA tests to be able to evaluate are these really relatives...If they're not a relative, then we're not going to go back and place them with someone who is not a relative. We've got to be able to figure out what to do with them.

Some of the adults are saying we don't want to take these children -- we want to be deported and we'll start all over again and come back. This time it will be easier to not have to travel a month-long through Mexico with a child. We'll just try to catch up with them later.

So it's a very complicated situation to try to be able to work through reconnecting. There are 102 of those individuals that are 4 years old and younger. They've already reconnected half of them. The other half they're still trying to determine, is this a relative -- is this the right person to be able to place them with and will the adults even take them if we do?

https://www.cnsnews.com/news/articl...en-parents-dont-want-take-their-children-back

Deep into the extraordinary effort to find deported parents who remain separated from their children, attorneys are learning that about two-thirds want their children to stay in the U.S. rather than reunite as a family in their homelands.

“We’ve had some very difficult conversations with parents this week, where the parent is ultimately saying, as much as they’d like to be with the child and as heartbreaking as it is, it’s too dangerous for the child to come back,” Lee Gelernt, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, told a San Diego federal judge Friday.

The decisions show something government officials have long argued: that migrant families from Mexico and Central America who cross illegally into the U.S. do so largely to get their children across. Having the children flown back to their home countries — where many say they are fleeing gang violence — would seem counterproductive to the parents, even if it results in long-term separation.

Of course, I'm sure these people don't know what they are talking about, right?

Of course, I'm sure these people don't know what they are talking about, right?

Right.

If they're traffickers and not really the parents of the children, why are they concerned about their safety should they be returned to their home country?

Still separated: Nearly 500 migrant children taken from their parents remain in U.S. custody

They should all be taken away. Using children as political pawns should be discouraged at all costs.

You have PROOF that those are their parents? THE SUPPOSED PARENTS (or TRAFFICKERS) don't.

Maybe we should just let the child sex traffickers go unimpeded, or even just HAND THE KIDS OVER TO THEM, as your beloved Pres.Mommy Pants did.....

Kids know who their parents are, and parents know who their kids are. Maybe we need to start removing children from everyone accused of a misdemeanor, which is what illegal entry into the US is, and making them prove that they're really their children. Doesn't that sound like a great idea?

So 500 children at $750 per child per day since May or June, let's go with 6 months here = roughly $67,500,000.

Geez no wonder there are people very ready to keep those children here. Money in the bank for those "non profits". It's pretty sickening.
