We no longer "occupy" Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Guam, etc. We do have military in country with agreements with the host country.

And we can be asked to leave a la Philippines.... They asked that we leave and we abandoned some of the largest military bases in the area.

Any nation we have SOFA agreements with can ask us to leave their country.

Japan has recouped huge areas in the main islands and Okinawa and are negotiating to absord MCAS Futenma next.

The Philippines took back Subic Bay, NAS Cubi Point and Clark AFB.

Iraq asked we leave and we complied.

How did it work out for the Eastern Bloc nations when they got a bit uppity? Quite a bit differently.

No, presence if most often occupation. But yes, the Soviet occupation of Europe turned out very differently from the US occupation of Europe. Mainly that the Russians never went with Wilson's national self-determination anno 1919, for them it was good ol'-fashioned vassal state, and if you don't understand that, we'll roll in the tanks. That's why Putin right now has the tanks lined up along the borders of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, ready to roll in whenever he thinks his puppet has broken NATO. 'Cause these snivelling little countries aren't supposed to choose their own destiny, they're Stalin's old warloot!
