NATO can’t find country willing to lead fourth combat battalion in front line against a resurgent Russia

NATO can?t find country willing to lead fourth combat battalion in front line against a resurgent Russia | National Post

Security concerns are as high now as they have been since the end of the Cold War. As the immigration crisis has strained relations within the Continent, anxieties have been heightened by Russian military offensives in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, and a bombing campaign in Syria that has demonstrated Moscow’s rapidly increasing capabilities. Lately, Russia has talked openly about the utility of tactical nuclear weapons.

Despite the growing threats, many European countries still resist strong measures to strengthen NATO. Many remain reluctant to increase military spending, despite past pledges. Some, like Italy, are cutting back. France is reverting to its traditional skepticism toward the alliance, which it sees as an instrument of U.S. policy and an infringement on its sovereignty.
Kerist- The European members cannot get this done.

I hope they realize they are making Trump's assessment of European participation in NATO correct. It would also be nice if the various European NATO members demonstrated some understanding of the fact that the dismemberment of NATO has always been a Russian objective since NATO's inception. Honestly, if they prefer to eat and sleep with the Bear, I'm gonna be fine with it.

Not sure I completely buy the article as written, but... Inevitably, NATO will appeal to the US to deal with protecting Europe.

Kerist- The European members cannot get this done.

What a load of political nonsense to (probably) distract people from their stagnating economies being stifled by massive government intervention.

A) the 'Russian military offensives' are little more then protecting the people who voted OVERWHELMINGLY to join their country.
If Cubans voted over 90% in a referendum to join America and were then attacked by the Castro regime to try and deny them their democratic rights of self-determination - would America not send in troops to defend those people who desperately wanted to join America? Or at the very least, supply arms to those fighting Havana?
That is all Russia is doing.
In both the Crimea and the Donetsk region, the people their voted over 90% to join Russia. But Kiev ignored the results and would obviously rather kill their own people rather then let them leave.
Does Putin want more power...of course he does. Is he a jerk? Of course he is. But IMO, Russia is doing little wrong in protecting the people of the Crimea and the Donetsk region who simply wanted to join Russia.

B) the bombing campaign in Syria brought stability to a mess. Or would Washington rather Islamist extremists were running Syria?
And Russia is no more capable now then before Syria...they just beat up on a force with no Air Force and few anti aircraft guns/missiles.

and C) I don't know about this tactical nuclear warhead thread. But considering the installation of the anti-missile system in Romania(?) recently, I don't blame the Russians for feeling less secure.

Finally, Russia is NO THREAD conventionally to Europe as G.B., France and Germany alone spend over three times what Russia does on their militaries. Russia is a fraction as powerful (conventionally) as it was compared to the Soviet Union.

This is just posturing nonsense and another ignorant article from journalists who almost never understand military matters - on either side.

Re: NATO can’t find country willing to lead fourth combat battalion in front line aga

1. All of these countries won't spend on the military because they have abdicated their overall security to the U.S. If something real happens, they will ask for our intervention and that threat is what is keeping them secure today.

2. This is blatant propaganda. It is not Russia that has increased tensions but western powers. You can't expect to keep poking Russia and think they will not respond. If any foreign country had a decent amount of legitimacy to go into Syria, it was Russia, as they did it at the behest of the Syrian government. We got in there and supported rebels, who have demonstrated to not be much better than ISIS and we've not had any past alliance with, yet Russia is bad for going to the aid of an ally? This is stupid.

As far as Crimea, that is Russian, period. It was never fully under the authority of Ukraine and it was only put there a few decades ago when it was still part of the Soviet Union, so it didn't really matter. Crimea also is the location of their only warm-water navy base. You can bet your ass Russia had many reasons to do what they did.

As far as Ukraine, the current western-back Kiev government really doesn't have any legitimacy. They threw out their democratically elected President because he didn't want to sign a trade agreement? Please, they could have just reelected someone else the next election or then thrown him out if he didn't leave office after actually losing. And it was really cool to have the head of the CIA and the Assistant Secretary of state over there canoodling with the protesters and act like there wasn't some provocation going on.

It was also really cool that the U.S. always rejected offers from Russia to have mediations between the various parties and see what kind of non-violent solutions or agreements could be reached. Because calming things down and talking about them is really bad.

It's really bad when our foreign policy is so bad that Russia is the one sounding rational half the time.

It's sad to watch Europe in its spineless state.

What happened to these people? Where are the men?

The US, UK, and Germany will each contribute a battalion. Poland and the Baltic states will contribute a combined battalion. Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine have formed a non-NATO combined battalion. The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary have pledged troops. NATO force numbers and compositions will be firmed up during the NATO summit in Warsaw in July. These allied battalions will act as a "trip wire".

Russia has positioned 3 divisions on its western border and is atm constructing a new military base in the village of Soloti, southeast of Belgorod, Russia to house perhaps another 3,500 soldiers.

Re: NATO can’t find country willing to lead fourth combat battalion in front line aga

If you look how much diffrent countries spend on defence European countries doesn't need to spend more money on the defence. Because if you look at the three biggest spenders on defence in European part of Nato UK, France and Germany spend more than double on defence compared to Russia. Also USA spend almost ten time more on defence than Russia.

Even if it of course can need planing to deal with a russian atack. But a russian atack is a very unlikely scenario. But if you are afraid of a war between the West and Russia you should also be concerned about reducing the numbers of nukes, because the numbers is ridiculous high. That if Nato reduced it numbers of nukes to 100 and Russia did the same nukes would still be a big detterent but you had large liveable places left in the world after a nuclear war.

What should be of much more concern is Saudi Arabia because not only are they spending more on defence the Russia but also they have more access to western military techology as an allied to the west. That at the same time they are one of the worlds most fundemantelist and brutal dictaturships in the world, with a lot of anti western teachings. So in the future you have both the treath of the goverment turning anti west like Iran did or that countries is thrown into internal turmoil and becoming a military equipment smörgåsbord for terrorist.

Russia has been causing issues along the borders with the Baltic States.

What "issues" have Russia been causing with the Baltic States?

I would say the US and NATO have been causing some "issues" there by parading troops back and forth, marching from Germany to Estonia, along those Russian borders.

If Russian troops were parading in Mexico or Canada, we would be having fits. When Russia put missiles in Cuba, we nearly started WWIII.

We need to keep things in perspective.

(1)Countries of NATO would rather devote more money in their budget to domestic things. Leave the defense to the US.
(2)Certain politicians would rather the US police the world so the US can control what goes on in the world.
(3)Even though the US provides most of the military defense for NATO, the US leaves plans for the defense of NATO nations up to NATO. These items constitute an expensive and fruitless combination for the US.

Yeah!

If only Europe would do things like set up a predatory and broken healthcare system that bankrupts families en masse... They would qualify for protection in your mind

I hope I see the day when we close down every European base.
