WASHINGTON—California Democrat Nancy Pelosi was elected speaker of the House of Representatives on Thursday, making her the first person to reclaim the gavel since 1955.

Mrs. Pelosi picked up the majority of votes needed to win the speaker’s gavel and lead the House in an era of divided government. She will take the reins of an ideologically diverse Democratic caucus into the 2020 presidential race. She won 220 votes to 192 for Republican....[pay wall]

An effective & proven leader who has shown she can stand up to The Donald.

Congrats Nancy....trump and his goons at the White House are on notice...There is a new sheriff in town

I'm not a fan of the woman. Never was. But I do believe in the next 2 years she will do a fine job for her party. She's a shrewd woman and a pretty good politician.

I wish her and the entire Congress well.

Technically the people Trump has surrounded himself with - like his family - are not goons but only stooges. Calling them goons gives them a status that they do not deserve.

One of the main reasons Trump's AC casinos went bankrupt is he put only people he could trust in charge. And look at the dismal results. Same thing with having his family in the WH.

I would say people like Stephen Miller and Peter Navarro are goons.....Others like Kelly were stooges

She's not the best Speaker, but she is the best speaker right now to stand up to Trump and McConnell.

Congrats Speaker Pelosi

Give him hell !!

Meh. I suppose she may be able to put a resistance on Trump and that's likely the goal for the short term. But long term, it would seem to me that if the Dems want to be successful I don't think they can keep returning to their old guard. We'll see how this progresses though.

Not a fan of Pelosi, but no one knows all of the procedural moves and how to manage the various House of Representatives committee's better than Nancy

Right now the Dems are outnumbered 2-1 (effectively) in congress (with McConnell demonstrating he is a Trump lackey).

Which other Dem in the house right now in the house do you think could do a better job against McConnell and Trump, especially since McConnell has demonstrated he is nothing more than a third Trump arm by saying he won't bring to a vote anything that Trump doesn't approve of beforehand?

That one was a nail biter -- not.

Glad she is back. She gave a message of unity.

I can tolerate her for two more years, but no longer.

She needs to groom a replacement who's actually in touch with the people and the zeitgeist and trajectory of the party immediately.

Is that a glimmer of faith in Dems I see in your post?

Oh no, I don't expect they'll be anything other than the status quo Corporate-Statists they've been for quite some time now. It's just, if they want to succeed and show that they're different, they can't continue to fall back to their Old Guard. I offer no faith in either party, if they are ever to gain my vote, they must do so through dedication and action towards the Republic and the People.

I don't know what all your priorities are but, I suspect the closest you may get to them will be found in Democratic primaries for years to come.

We'll see. I mostly vote Libertarian these days, so I don't hold hope that the Dems would put someone up who is sufficiently within my political ideology to warrant my support of them.

Prolly not. Libertarian overlaps some with progressives but there are some deep divides too.

I really don’t like her as a politician. But these are unusual times and at least for the next two years I can see the benefit of having someone with her experience in the chair. But progressives will have to settle for putting their agenda on hold. Nancy is NOT a progressive.

Libertarian philosophy has overlaps with both left and right, and some strong divides between them as well. But I don't hold myself to a single party, I will vote for who I believe is the best candidate, who can do the best job, and who best echoes my own personal ideologies. I won't say that I'd never vote D or R, just that it would take a very good candidate for me to consider it.

Sure...like Trump is afraid of that old California cow.

So much for the Blue Wave and wanting things to be different. 90% of democrats re-elected and they put the exact same person in charge again. Which is what caused the GOP to take the House, the Senate, and the White House in the first place. It feels like were stuck in a loop/
