TRENTON — It took about two minutes from the time Senate President Steve Sweeney certified the passage of the millionaires tax package for Gov. Chris Christie to veto the bills at his desk.
"While I have little doubt that the sponsors and supporters of this bill sincerely believe that the state can tax its way out of this financial crisis, I believe that this bill does nothing more than repeat the failed, irresponsible and unsustainable fiscal policies of the past," wrote Christie in his veto statement. "Now is not the time for more of the same. Ultimately, another tax increase will punish the state’s struggling small businesses and set our economy further back from recovery."
“I think this is a defining moment and New Jersey is watching us,” said Assemblyman Paul Moriarty (D-Gloucester). “They will find out today who stands with the 600,000 senior citizens struggling to pay their taxes and keep their homes, and who stands with the 16,000 millionaires simply being asked to pay their fair share in a shared sacrifice this budget season
Why would you be FOR this???
Do you understand that republicans are just as bad if not WORSE than demon-rats on spending!??!
The Gov aint chopping any programs now is he??
So where are they going to get the money? Not from the poor! They take some of it. Not from the lower middle class to the upper middle class either.
So where are they going to get the money?
They dont have the balls to kick illegal mexicans out to help their state economy.
Are they going to BORROW the money!?!?
Fortunately, from everything I hear, this will all be over in 2013. Christie is pissing off far too many people, especially people in the educational community, teachers, parents, students. It is unfortunate that Corzine chose to run. Pretty much ANY other Democrat would have defeated Christie.
Only when the results are the same. I'm expecting the budget to finally be balanced. Not sure why the liberals can't get behind it - Christie's simply doing what Obama said we all have to do --- sacrifice and tighten our belts. As far as this particular issue goes, Christie is banking on short term pharmaceutical rebates and gutting other programs. It's mostly gimmicks with little substance. Should he create a "millionaire's tax"? No, that's kind ridiculous for even the Dems to suggest.
Dems use tax and spend. Repubs use bait and switch. All pretty much the same.
Hardly - he was voted in to do exactly what he's doing. The only people he's pissing off are the one's who didn't vote for him in the first place - no big loss there. By 2013, if he keeps doing what he's doing, we'll be diverted from the brink of destruction - which is where the State was headed for 30 years.

Libs ignore a golden rule of state taxation scheme. Golden Geese have wings and if the parasites try to pluck them too many times they fly off to friendlier climates leaving the parasites with nothing to pluck and those who pander to parasites in a tough position trying to satiate the ever expanding appetites of the looter class that elected them based on the promise of plucking golden feathers from others
Do you live in NJ?I'm not sure about that. I've heard more dissension and annoyance from more people that I talk to, even conservatives, the I did since the whole McGreevy debacle. All he's doing is playing fast and loose with funds to give the impression that he's doing something. Some of his sacrifices inpacting education are downright absurd. Like many, he's afraid to make the hard choices... cutting spending AND raising taxes for fear that some folks will hear "raising taxes" and he won't get re-elected. Problem is, his cuts are pretty high profile and damaging... which will hurt him just as bad. It makes little sense to "save" the state by making cuts, when there's not much left to save after all your cuts.
One could say Progressive believe that we're better off in a collective mentality. Man wasn't built to live or function in a collective.Conservatives always forget that as a society, what happens to some of us, trickles down and affects the rest. They seem to believe that if we eliminate one thing, it won't affect anyone else. This is the delusion of individualism when living in a society.
So, now that we have dispensed with the foolish partisan hackery, do you want to discuss the issue?
I never forget that and I still want and support and hope for more cuts that Christie is proposing. So it affects you. You deal with it and move on. Because we live in a society doesn't mean society trumps individuals - quite the contrary.Conservatives always forget that as a society, what happens to some of us, trickles down and affects the rest. I don't think you can. the fact is rich people are smarter-for the most part-than the people who vote in parasite-pandering politicians. They will move if the cost of living in a state is too high. That is why Texas is gaining millionaires and places like Kalifornia, NY and NJ are leaking themConservatives always forget that as a society, what happens to some of us, trickles down and affects the rest. what are the parasites going to do when the gravy train has pulled up the rails and left town.
Do you live in NJ?
It SHOULD impact education since the ROI on thowing more money at education is foolish at best. Second, if he raises taxes - he will be booted out sooner than 2013. Our property taxes in this state are among if not the highest in the country. I'm hoping he's going to cut more and damage more of the liberal mound of debt. The amount of waste and protectionism that has grown under Democrats like that disaster Corzine; unions and the Assembly in NJ is what he's taking on. Raising taxes is not the answer - cutting waste, and making the poor teachers pay 1.5% into their own health care is what's driving this. Cry me a river... The free lunch for liberals, unions and government workers is finally over and they don't like it. Like Obama stated: we all have to sacrifice and tighten our belt. That means unions, liberals and government workers in the State of NJ.
And I'm not sure who you're talking to claiming they're conservatives... but no conservative I know of is pissed off at Christie. Grown men I work with are stating if they see him, they want to kiss the guy! I don't think I'd take it quite that far... Perhaps you or they, are categorizing their "conservativeness" incorrectly.

What is so bad about cutting education spending? We've thrown billions down that hole with only worse results, at what point do we stop that madness?
Wrong. Man is a social creature, and throughout history has always gravitated to function in groups.
Depends on degree. I work with MANY school systems, and am hearing about the programs/facilities being cut. It's like amputating an arm to treat an infection. Clean the wound, treat it with anti-biotics FIRST.

Oh boy, here we go again!
Working in a "group" is not a collective. Individualism does not preclude the Group. I said COLLECTIVE. Not groups.
The PROBLEM with the school system is it's a monopoly without competition.
End that, and you will see huge benefits in terms of cost, and end product.
It is after 30 years of debt spending.Just like Democrats who only want to look at taxing things to solve the problem, all Christie seems to want to do is cut things. It's not a solution.
Describe why it's FAR too damaging? And didn't the school system have the opportunity to take pay freezes and reduce the impact on their own and didn't the NJ teachers unions vote against it? He gave them the choice and they chose... now they get cut. It's a valuable lesson in consequences and a "teachable moment".I have no problem with cutting waste and teachers paying into their health benefits; most of us do, so why not them. My problem is that his cuts are FAR too damaging to the educational system, cutting many helpful and positive programs. Big mistake, as it hurts our youth... who will soon vote.
Taxes have already been raised. Sales tax was increased to 7%, fuel taxes were increased, parkway and turnpike increases have been going up to cover shortfalls, liquor tax, property reassessments and increased property taxes just occurred last year. Here's a little fact to mix with our views:Raising taxes, or raising the sales tax which I would be more inclined to support, along with cutting waste, would bring in some of the extra money the state needs. And he wouldn't be alienating a entire voter base.
The Tax Foundation - Tax Research Areas > New JerseyThe Tax Foundation said:New Jersey's State/Local Tax Burden Highest in Nation
Estimated at 11.8% of income, New Jersey's state/local tax burden percentage is the highest in the country, well above the national average of 9.7%. New Jersey taxpayers pay $6,610 per capita in state and local taxes.
Lots of men I know, who identify as conservatives, and who support most conservative positions, want to kill him. Most of these folks are parents and are not happy with what is happening in the schools.
