When it was first released in the theaters I saw the Martin Scorsese epic GANGS OF NEW YORK and did like it very much. Over the years I have slowly come to change my opinion of it and just now watched it on Showtime in its entirety. I now consider it a great film rich with amazing detail and great acting and easily one of the three best films Scorsese has ever made.

I was wondering if there are others who also have a film like this.

I can't think of a movie but a TV show comes to mind. I thought Gilligan's Isle was the dumbest show ever made but watching it now I see an undercurrent of biting political and social commentary and satire with a dose of sexual under current that is border line pornography. Simply brilliant!
 
Goodfellas and Tombstone.
 
Equilibrium. I thought it was a cheaply made sci-fi movie with cool gun scenes. Then I picked up the political undertones later in life and it has become one of my favorite movies.

No Country for Old Men. It's a decent movie, but the ending absolutely infuriated me the first time I saw it.

The main character dies off screen and the bad guy gets away scot-free at the end? WTF? wtf.gif

However, once I read up a bit on the film's symbolism, I did come to appreciate what it was trying to accomplish a lot more.

That being said though, I still maintain that "3:10 to Yuma" is little more than snarky and subversive overrated post-modern crap.

Oh, really movie? I'm supposed to view Russell Crowe's capricious homicidal sociopath of a character as being some kind of hero just because he's vaguely "nice" to all of the "noble Indians", doesn't take any crap from "The Man (TM)," and willingly gets on a train (that he has already admitted he has every intention and ability of escaping further down the line) at the end? F*ck off. :roll:

Feel the same way about The Last of the Mohicans and Glory

consider those two films among the ten best made in the last 30 years.

Every time I watch them I see more and more to like

I consider the scene where DDL is negotiating with the Huron Chief against "Magwa" among the greatest scenes ever filmed.

You're making me wonder if I need to re-watch Gilligan's Island all over.... :wassat1:
 
If you don't mind old school movies, I'd like to mention "The Elephant Man" (1980). I didn't quite get it at first, but then it showed me the power of the human spirit. That no matter how bad a deal you get in life it is still possible to overcome adversity, accept ones limitations, and still see the positives that make life worth living.

With that man's example I never have trouble justifying my continued existence or the value of my fellow man. ;)
