So it has been a while since the wifey and I saw a movie, so we went to see this.
It was... interesting to say the least. The trailer doesn't really make it clear what it is, and so we took a flyer on it.
It revolves around a mixed race pair of brothers and their father. Dad is a hard working, but very straight laced man, who has a black son and an older white son who gets out of prison for theft. the story centers around trust, family and space guns in rural America. Oh and underworld crime.
I know right?
The first part sets the stage, I liked Dennis Quaid's character, and the young man playing his son Eli are good. You get a sense of desperation, of strong parental love. Then the older brother Jimmy shows up.
If the film makers wanted me to feel bad for this kid, they failed, he's a walking disaster, from the moment he arrives till the end of the movie, just bad decisions and "wtf". There is a scene in... ehm dancing that I found painfully cheesy about 1/3rd of the way into the film.
The first 2/3'rds of the movie are all about Eli being dragged for an adventure by his idiot criminal older brother and the mystery of Eli's space gun. The last third took an interesting turn and twist that made me realize they are hoping to make a much bigger sequel.
If you're bored this weekend, or it's too hot, give it a shot, otherwise wait for it to hit Netflix
