Hmmmm. Let's say, "most influential Christian ever." Byzantine Emperor Constantine. Albeit, he didn't convert technically until his death bed. He is responsible for making Christianity mainstream, and bringing order to Christianity.

Lets not forget the Romans Kept records. So we do know quite a few Biblical figures that lived.

Not Counting Jesus.....I would have to say for the major jump off it was the Emperor Constantine. After that I would say that it was Paul.

As Non Religious Figures.....I would note that Pepin the Father of Charles The Hammer Martel and Great Grandfather to Charlemagne was responsible for causing the Gauls, Goths, and many in now what we call Europe, to drop their pagan Gods and become Christians. At the point of the Sword.

Was it surviving pretty well in a democracy back then? There were major corruption issues that caused people to rebel and become Protestants. Those Protestants had a huge influence on the development of Western democratic culture.

Paul.

His Roman citizenship allowed him to spread Christianity across the Roman provinces, which greatly assisted in expansion. Had he not been, Christianity might not have gotten very far.
