IDF strikes Hamas terror targets in Gaza after rockets land in southern Israel
Tunnels originating in Gaza City which are used to attack civilians on the other side of the border are destroyed in Israel operation

After a rocket was fired from Gaza into southern Israel, Israeli fighter jets struck two Hamas targets.

The Israel Defence Forces struck two Hamas tunnels originating in Gaza City on Saturday night. “We will continue operating to defend Israeli civilians,” the IDF said in a statement.

More rockets. More tunnels.

More waste.

There is a tragic side to Hamas’ tunnel strategy. Roughly 9,000 homes were destroyed during Protective Edge, and very few have been rebuilt. This is not Israel’s fault, as building supplies flow regularly into Gaza. But according to declassified intelligence reports, these supplies are routinely stolen by Hamas in order to serve the group’s terrorist purposes. Hamas smuggles in cement, diverts from construction and humanitarian donations, and even raids civilian construction sites in order to rebuild its tunnels. Estimates are that one tunnel can cost a million dollars to build and uses around 50,000 tons of concrete. Close to a million tons of concrete were poured into the terror tunnels before 2014.

The tunnels, in this sense, are a zero-sum game. If the same materials were put into reconstruction, the Gazan people would be better off and, lacking this crucial asymmetric warfare capability, Hamas would be less tempted to attack Israel. On the other hand, with the same limited materials going to terror tunnels, the people of Gaza continue to live in ruins while Hamas rebuilds its war machine.

While Hamas appears to be deterred in the short term, it continues to believe that the tunnels are its only strategic weapon. While it may not be interested in another war, the tunnels continue to be dug for a reason. Once used, however, they lose their effectiveness, as the IDF knows their locations and can thus destroy them. Hamas is well aware of this dilemma. The tunnels essentially leave Israel and Hamas in an arms race—with Israel racing to develop a technological solution before Hamas decides to launch another round of fighting.

Once again Hamas ignores the fact their actions are wasting needed materials and labor on more weapons and more tunnels.

The Pro-Palestinian contingent who can't understand why building materials are limited.... Here is your answer.

Of course money/resources spent by Palestinians in Gaza to try to defend themselves are to be demonized. Not only are they denied their right to self determination with any/every act of resistance portrayed as terrorism, it seems they have also lost their right to self defence here too. What a shocker

Hamas’s defensive doctrine made the strategic difference. Due to Hamas’s inability to counter the overwhelming power of the IDF, the organization transferred most of its activities (offensive, defensive, logistics, and command) underground. Just as the Iron Dome was the game-changer for Israel, the underground network complex became the strategic balancer for Hamas.

Which tunnel is "defending" Gaza?

Please explain how tunnels dug INTO Israel are somehow defending the Palestinians...

Please employ logic and try to make sense.

You really didn't really read your link....

Gaza’s most recent terror campaign, which started in March, has used measures ranging from rocket and mortar attacks, including attacks on the southern city of Ber-Sheva, to the use of incendiary kites and balloons that have caused large-scale damage to agriculture and forestry, to attacks against soldiers along the border. However, calls for a more aggressive response have gone unheeded, even by Israel’s right-wing defense minister, who threatened less than two years ago to destroy Hamas if it were to challenge Israel. Though more than 150 Palestinians have been killed trying to break through the border fence or in attempted terror attacks, Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes to the mortar and rocket fire have been confined to “real estate“ targets that have not killed many Hamas operatives. No offensive ground operation has been initiated. In contrast, previous rounds of escalation in 2008–9, 2012, and 2014 led Israel to initiate more intense military operations.

Hmmmmm

Butttttt - they have walls!!! (What's a tunnel???)

Seriously, Hamas needs to spend a few years without militancy, and if Israel kills a bunch of them then blame will be obvious.

Sorry, but that's where we are. They are the weak side, and the outrage card is growing less effective each passing decade(!?!?!!!).

Neither side in that mess can get the weapons from the militant fundies.

Well according to our President the wall in Israel is perfect and stops everyone. I guess that he never heard of tunnels before.

Who said the wall is perfect?

It does cost Hamas huge in manpower, construction materials and can only be used once for incursions...

Win, win for the Israelis.

Yes but two things;

A) Israel has developed an high-tech solution to the tunnels in the last years. It has become functional several months ago. All of the terrorists' tunnels that go through the border and into Israel in both the border with Gaza and with Lebanon are either known and monitored or already neutralized.
B) The wall your president keeps referring to is on a different border.

Really no **** its a different border wtf would have known?

Tunnels............... , it's tunnels !.......... and it wouldn't have took much thought to have sussed at least that much out. Enlightening once more

Nobody is talking about them except you. Not the commentator whose article I cited ( that you no doubt never read ) nor me...........only you. The man who thinks there is one tunnel under Gaza !
Please employ logic and try to make sense.

Try leading by example and review your own poor , very poor , start in this regard

Hmmmmm

I read two articles but only cited from one

Relevance ? To what I chose to quote from that article ?

Also it doesn't mean I agree with everything else the commentator states in that article or the other commentator in the other article ( not cited )

This isn't hard to follow either

The tunnels under Gaza help deter Israeli ground incursions into major urban centres in Gaza and that's their defensive value

Really no **** its a different border wtf would have known?

Evidently people who try to portray themselves as knowledgeable on this subject but show their ignorance of it instead

Yeah I'm sure that's what people who support murdering innocents would say.

Have you ever heard of this thing called sarcasm?

Yep , and ?

The Wall is on the West Bank border regardless and it doesn't look like you knew that. But to be fair you don't come across as someone who thinks they are well versed on this subject unlike the other poster that made the same error

Yeah I'm sure that's what people who support murdering innocents would say.

Attempt at baiting completely ignored and laughed at

Just somebody who thinks that Palestinians have a right to defend themselves too. Something you probably will have to have pointed out to you ( as you have here ). And I wouldn't have it any other way tbh

I wasn't the one bringing up the wall.

Never said you were and you are just trying to use this as a deflection to hide your ignorance of the subject. Obviously

What a ridiculous statement.

The tunnels in Gaza prompts IDF to take action against the tunnels. Tunnels that exit into Israel defend no one.
