Some who post on DP have been telling us that most of us shouldn't worry because the virus is only killing old, obese and pre-existing condition Americans. Well, with the lovely, profit-based healthcare system in America, not dying can be just a bit of a problem for most people who spend weeks in an ICU.

Newest report says kids are getting the virus. If it doesn't kill them, it still will greatly affect not only their lives but also those of their parents and siblings.

More than 97,000 children tested positive for Covid-19 in the last two weeks of July

The report, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association, said in those two weeks, there was a 40% increase in child cases across the states and cities that were studied.

The age range for children differed by state, with some defining children as only those up to age 14 and one state -- Alabama -- pushing the limit to 24.

The compiled data comes during back-to-school season as health officials are trying to understand the effects of the virus on children and the role young people play in its spread. Some schools have begun welcoming crowds back to class and others have had to readjust their reopening plans in response to infections.

In one Georgia high school that made headlines after a photo of a crowded school hallway went viral, nine coronavirus cases were reported, according to a letter from the principal. Six of those cases were students and three were staff members, the letter said.

We keep learning more about this virus, it's bad, and we've yet to learn more.

How many of those 97K died?

and counting 24 year olds as "children" is laughable.

Can you give a link to those posts. Not sure I remember anyone putting it quite like that.

I remember where posters cited scientific evidence where it was found that children are less likely to get severely ill and die from it than adults.

Hey, it's Alabama that's counting 4 year olds as "children". Causes me to wonder if the legislature plans to raise the voting age to 25 or higher because 18 to 24 year-olds are too immature to vote.

Then there is the other point I mention in the OP in regards to " the lovely, profit-based healthcare system in America, not dying can be just a bit of a problem for most people who spend weeks in an ICU."

There's lots of long-term effects on the heart and lungs and neurological damage. It's not either die or fully recover. Children in Florida who tested positive with no symptoms have shown lung damage on X-ray.

Health officials worry about long-term effects of COVID-19 on kids

"A warning from Doctor Alina Alonso, the director of the Department of Health Palm Beach County: Just because you don’t see any COVID-19 symptoms in a child doesn’t mean damage hasn’t been done.

“And while many of these especially younger children are asymptomatic when you take x-rays of their lungs, down in Miami and other places across the country, they’re seeing that there is damage to the lungs in these asymptomatic children.”

The USA being how it is, expect a shower of lawsuits.
Here's a question- What would you do if you were told the schools were going to open and you have to sign a liability disclaimer on the first day?

No doubt, there is much we don't know about the disease.
Scary stuff.

I can't wait until there is a vaccine.

Yep. It's this kind of information that people need to think about when assessing how much exposure they're willing to risk and to what end. We all have to get groceries and other essentials, or come into contact with other people. For necessities it's a necessary risk, but for elective activities one should choose wisely. I'm not advocating what risks people should or shouldn't take, but that a decision is made factoring in all the potential hazards.

Why is this surprising to anyone? Children represent about a quarter of the population, and based on this, they are only about 10% of the positive tests.

If my kid catches it, I am going to be exceptionally angry. Republican morons forced the schools open here.

IDK. Not much difference in price between a day in the hospital through the ER and spending the rest of that calendar year on the hospital for me. My max annual out of pocket is around $4K

How many other people caught it from them?

You really just don't seem to get it.

If you are going to criticize people for saying Apples, you are not vindicated in declaring oranges. You really just don't seem to get it.....but you will if you keep thinking that mask is going to save you.
