More Proof of Canada's Failed Mental Health Policies?

I've been liberal all my life- I know what it means. And I know that anyone who advocates government surveillance of citizens or more laws nd more powers for the police isn't liberal, I don't care what you, he, or anyone else says.
The simple fact is, every freedom you enjoy was won for you by liberals and they had to fight conservatives to do it.
And I don't smoke pot.

Then you're defining a liberalism that doesn't exist in 2016. You're choosing to be loyal to politicians that changed the meaning of the word long ago. Maybe you'd be a libertarian in the US, idk.

Canada in many ways is like taking a time machine back to 1960s America. Enjoy it while you can.

you may be right there

I was on a Canadian site for many years until it fell apart. We had many Americans and as we got to know each other over the years the thing that most surprised them was how generally liberal we were about some things but what they considered to be very conservative about other issues.

we kind of slide back and forth

we are a strange country... ;)

we are still little

Oh yes it does. I'm Canadian. I vote for the Liberal Party, when I vote. Sometimes they go a little to far left, then I don't vote. Up here the people you confuse with liberals, socialists, progressives, the far left, vote for the NDP, the New Democratic Party. And you know who votes for the Conservative Party.
That's your problem when it comes to defining those words. You only have two parties and because those on the far-left are probably Democrats, you confuse them with liberals and think the word doesn't mean what it used to. Sorry buddy, I know there's an awful lot of you Americans but you're not the whole English-speaking world. If you insist on misusing words you'll probably be understood only by others who misuse them the same way. The rest of us will just lose patience with the wilfull ignorance and just not bother anymore.
And no, I don't suppose you care about that.

pity :2razz:

(grin!)
I never decided to stop toking, I just realized one day that I don't anymore. I grow for my wife and son and my cousin with MS who cooks with it, and we can be generous with friends.
Besides, where we live it'd be almost a social blunder to not grow, it'd make you stand out.

Actually, that was an informing post and I can admit when I'm wrong. If I had you wrongly pegged or didn't understand the terminology, that's my fault.

All good. And thank you.

Which issues would you say that Canadians are generally conservative about? And which issues are you guys liberal on compared to us?

I would say we are liberal on social programs...we are generally willing to share what we have with the less fortunate in general...the way you said, like it was back a while ago in your country

but we are conservative about debt, we want our debt paid off, period

we are conservative about our politicians spending, I think most of us realize none of our parties have been particularly forth coming about their spending and both major parties have been caught with their pants down....I think we are quicker to criticize our own party leaning when they f up with our money

and behaviour within our justice system, although we are for the most part anti death penalty we are for sure all about prosecuting criminals and ensuring they do not repeat offend but unfortunately our current laws can be lax

that's just kind of off the top of my head

anyone else can jump in here...

I have to disagree about the fiscal conservative thing, Canadians are just situational when it comes to government spending. Otherwise the Trudeau government would not still be riding the wave of Trudeaumania. As along as the money is being spent on something worthwhile it does not matter. I also have to disagree about the justice system, we not a tough on crime kind of country like the US but we are also not particularity light on it either like some European countries as we do have more of a general focus on rehabilitation and release. I think you also missed the largest difference, Canada is usually several decades ahead of the US when it comes to progressive social policy.
