State passes bill to license more drivers who are here illegally - latimes.com

SACRAMENTO — Laboring late into the night Thursday to finish their work for the year, state lawmakers acted to allow many more immigrants who are in the country illegally to obtain California driver's licenses, a measure Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to sign.

A flurry of additional proposals sent to the governor would also affect immigrants, as well as gun users, teachers and job applicants. In addition, nannies, private healthcare aides and some other domestic workers would receive overtime pay under bill also headed for the governor's desk.

Beware the late night, last minute actions of the unaccountable Progressives lording over California.

As California's near term fate is sealed by Progressives, how much are citizens from other states willing to pay to keep California alive?

I guess its time to sink Cali and get our Money back by selling new beach front property.

I wonder how much we could get for California from Mexico?

Despite the idiocy in Sacramento, California is still a net payer of federal taxes. Perhaps the idiocy in Washington trumps that in Sacramento.

Rather than give the state back to Mexico, let's bring back the Bear Flag Republic.

The Republic of California, better known as the Bear Flag Republic, was estalished under the leadership of William B. Ide. A proclamation set forth the justification and purpose of the revolution,

I get a kick out of those that complain about which states are "net payers" yet see no problem with the federal gov't spending more that they dare ask for in taxation and spending a good part of that on things not related to any federal power stated in the constitution. Those folks likely spend many hours pouring over tax law and keeping records and receipts to justify paying the least amount of personal federal income tax (FIT) possible, yet mock states that containing folks doing exactly the same thing but more successfully. The bottom line is that the states that pay the most FIT simply have the most rich people/businesses in them, since the top 10% of income earners pay 71% of the total FIT and poor folks get the most return from federal social "safety net" program spending.

Most likely due to Hollywood and the tech and venture capitalist offices of Silicon Valley. Although, with the gold market being bumped up in recent years, California has become number six in gold producing states (the US is one of the top three gold producing nations).

Agriculture is really big here, too.

The water that comes from the Sierra in one year, (essential to agriculture) is worth more than all of the gold that has ever been mined there.

Interesting little factoid.

You are correct, Agriculture is really big business. However, as water is the key ingredient, Progressives have sought to turn that gold to lead...

HURON, Calif.—Two years of dry weather and regulatory water cuts are taking a mounting toll on California's giant farm belt, forcing farmers to idle more fields and workers even as much of the rest of the Golden State continues to recover from a debilitating recession.

Agreed, I didn't include that because agriculture is largely subsidized and the taxable profits come from the processed side (done less and less in California).

By all means, send all the undocumented workers back to where they came from and pay a living wage to all the bonafide Americans or legal residents willing to take their jobs.

I am 100% on board.

Dream on, they've increased the minimum wage for the illegals in the same session.

No no no, how much would we have to pay Mexico to take CA.

Mexico already controls California aka Mexifornia. Many municipalities have been under a state of occupation by Mexicans.

The state legislature is full of Mexican socialist.

I have heard more than a few state legislatures publicly claim that even the Mexican Mafia (ME) has it's own lobbyist walking on the floor of the capitol.

What do you expect when 50 % of all adults in Los Angeles County are classified as being illiterate or functional illiterates ? Stupid people putting stupid people in charge in Sacramento.

Not sure what Progressives have done to cause this drought.
San Joaquin Valley farmers have drained every regional river and are sucking aquifers dry.
Then, when lack of rainfall curtails their imports of North state water, they wail about libs.
Fact is, the SJV farmer is not going to be able to continue farming the desert forever.
Soil salinity, toxic runoff, poisoned groundwater will end the SJV's run as the nation's breadbasket.

Water in California is a gnarly and complex issue.

The growers on the West side of Fresno County, the ones who get their water from the Sacramento Delta, like to put up signs among their almond orchards and cotton fields claiming that Congress and the California legislature have made the area a desert.

While there is some truth to the allegation that Washington and Sacramento are partially to blame for there not being as much water as the growers would like, the fact of the matter is that the decision to limit pumping from the Delta was a judicial, and not a legislative decision.

And then there is the pumping from ground aquifers taking more water out of the ground than mother nature gives us every year, leading to lowering water tables and to subsidence.

Then there is hte issue of growers who sell their water allotments to Los Angeles.

Water rights is a big, complex, and difficult problem in Cali, and has been exacerbated by two drought years in a row. February and March of this year were the driest on record.

The question I always have with this issue is how are the illegals going to prove who they are and what documents are they going to use to get the drivers license.

Now if illegals are not supposed to be working, how are they going to pay for their auto insurance?

It always amazes me a bit as how horrible states like california are supposed to be, and how they are supposedly killing all their people, yet for some reason it is one of the most popular states in the country, and I don't see too many people jumping to move to states which are red and pointless. One would think with all the horrors of california that there would be no one there, and that the midwest would be the place to be for most people.

Anyway, the idea does seem a bit silly, but it may have it's benefits. A driver's license means purchasing a car, paying taxes on that purchase, paying for gas, creating commerce, and getting some form of taxes and state income from the people who normally work off the books and pay no taxes because reps oppose any path to allow them to legally be hired and pay their share. Maybe things like commerce create revenue as per capitalistic ideals, which then promotes other things, which increases a state's sterength, which means that keeping illegals out of legal commerce becomes a detrimental force in capitalism which thrives on more consumers. But I wouldn't expect the capitalism fanboys of the republican whiner party to actually be able to understand the basic principles of the economic system they supposedly want. Maybe republicans do not actually like capitalism and are looking for entitlements like communism which are only allowed to legal members of the state, but yet they call their beliefs capitalism? Perhaps the entitlement party, AKA republican whiles who are entitled to everything, is actually communist and does not want to let mexicans participate in open capitalism because they fear they might do better?

Despite it's problems california does seem to do better as a capitalist state than any red state in existence. Or maybe it is that people are forced against their will to live there, and the free market has not actually shown california to be a better place to live than red states.

Your point falls apart on one basic idea. Why the hell are those people there if their laws are so terrible? Why not be in a nice red state like Texas if california is so terrible? Why does it seem to actually work for them to do all those horrible things you complain about? It is really odd how according to some people liberal states do everything wrong, yet appear to finance the welfare of the rest of the country. Could it be some of those horrible things you hate actually promote commerce and spending and boost income for corporations while allowing people to live a better quality of life? Could it be that lower wages and poverty stifle a capitalist system and cause it to crash? Could it be that despite everything the reds say about how wrong the blue states are it is their own damned fault for living in squalor and without so much commerce?

You would have a point if "welfare" was actually "financed", as in paid for, but it is not. The federal gov't spends more than it dare ask for in taxation. California and Texas are #1 and #2, repectively, in both population and GDP for US states yet have very different taxation structures. California has a $6K higher GDP per capita than Texas but a much higher cost of living mostly due to the cost of housing (taxes?); making $50K in Houston, TX is like making $67K in Los Angeles, CA or making $50K in Dallas, TX is like making $84K in San Francisco, CA.

Now if illegals are not supposed to be working, how are they going to pay for their auto insurance?

How are they supposed to be working here and driving here if they aren't supposed to be here?

The fact of the matter is that they are here, are driving here without licenses, are working here and paying taxes (often on phony SS numbers).

oh, some of them are anyway.

Some of them are more into gangs and drugs.

Now, if we had a rational and well thought out immigration system, those hard working people would be here legally, would have real SS numbers, and would have drivers licenses. Moreover, they would have to have actually learned to drive in order to get one.

And those other guys, the gang bangers and such, would not have been allowed in in the first place.

If we had a rational immigration system, that is. Now, if we had a rational government, just imagine what a paradise this could be.

That did not answer anything I wrote.

Again how are these people going to prove who they are? What kind of documents are going to be accepted to prove identity to get this drivers license?

As most illegals are Mexican and they don't follow the law in their own country, why would anybody expect even if this law is passed, that anyone of them will go apply for this drivers license?

The only reason water is a big complex and difficult "problem" in California is because it's use goes against the agenda of the radical environmentalists who place humans lower on the food chain than others things, both living and dead.

In fact, environmentalists have been adding to the problem of feeding people by pushing through the destruction of water resource management assets.

Actually, that's only one of many problems.

California has some antiquated dams that no longer serve a purpose and should be removed. Even not so radical environmentalists, and some for whom conservation is not a priority will agree with some of the dam removal projects.

Oh. Let's try again:

People who have no documentation, the sorts you describe, most likely won't bother to go and get driver's licenses or anything else. Moreover, some of the illegals will be afraid to go to any sort of official government authority, even the DMV, for fear of being reported and deported.

so, there most likely won't be many issued anyway.
