WASHINGTON, July 7 (Reuters) - Neo-Nazis and other white supremacists have increasingly been able to infiltrate the U.S. military due to recruitment pressures created by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a watchdog group said on Friday.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks racist activities in the United States, said thousands of hate group members are now in the armed forces, especially in the Army, increasing the threat of domestic terrorism.

"There is mounting evidence that military recruiters and commanders, under intense pressure to meet manpower goals with the country at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, have relaxed standards designed to prohibit racist extremists from serving in the armed forces," the center's Chief Executive Richard Cohen told Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in a letter.

We recently had a thread on neo-Nazis here at DP - now the military is letting them in to the Armed forces!

I think this is a wonderful Idea.....perfect solution, I mean think about it:

1) These people are obviously not bright, thus easily manipulated into actions other people might not play along with. Easily used to kill and be killed.

2) By placing them in the military, we can keep tabs on them, and allow them to feel useful and "Proud" of what they are doing, while actually giving them something to be proud OF.

3) They will eventually Die.


Seems like a Win/Win to me.....

Hmm - I hope you're being sarcastic...

I fail to see the logic in letting neo-Nazi groups like the National Alliance into the Armed Forces. Keep in mind that their founder, William Pierce, wrote "The Turner Diaries," a book that was the blueprint for Timothy McVeigh's bombing of the Oklahoma City. Pierce and McVeigh sought to enroll followers in the Army to get training for a race war.

I'm not saying I support the neo-nazis, because I don't but if they want to join the armed forces, let them! Beliefs do not really matter in the Services, they are able to kill and defend our country just like everyone else.

Although beliefs don't matter, the propensity to ignore orders should.

If those in the know feel a particlar group may have such a trait they should certainly act on it.

Furthermore, our current use of the military is definitely more then killing and defending the country. I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard about us "winning hearts and minds".

There is neo-nazi graffitti in Bahgdad, standards are being relaxed to let neo-nazis into the Armed forces. Are you saying that shouldn't be discussed? That we should be silent about this?

Also - part of neo-Nazi strategy is to join the militia for training as part of the supposed race war that will come. We play right into their hands by allowing them into the military. Remember Timothy McVeigh?

I strongly support the troops and deeply respect them; but I believe more in calling a spade a spade. If there are active bigots in the military, good, let's recruit more. They'll get killed off sooner that way.

You make a good point that anyone can spray paint a swastika on a wall.The terrorist and muslims extreamist are often refered to as "hitlers in head scarves" by certian right wing talk show hosts,so perhaps it is the terrorist spray painting nazi crap on some walls.
