Months after Biden Promised to End Support for Yeman War, Congress Still has No Details
“After enjoying a public relations victory, the Biden administration has yet to offer any specifics on the nature of American participation in the Saudi-led war.”

MORE THAN two months after President Joe Biden announced that he would end “all American support for offensive operations in the war in Yemen, including relevant arms sales,” his administration has yet to detail what forms of support the U.S. has cut off.

Biden made the commitment in a February address, but he also promised to help defend Saudi Arabia from missile attacks and “threats from Iranian-supplied forces,” an apparent reference to assaults by Houthi rebels fighting the Saudi-backed government of Yemen. That left many members of Congress questioning how the administration would distinguish between offensive and defensive military support.

Forty-one progressive members of Congress wrote to Biden asking him to clarify what forms of support he had discontinued and which Trump-era arms sales would be deemed “relevant” to offensive operations. The letterrequested a response before March 25, six years to the day after a coalition of countries led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched their intervention to defeat the Iranian-backed Houthis. The intervention was supported by the United States, and both the Obama and Trump administrations provided weapons, intelligence, and, until 2018, mid-air refueling support for Saudi aircraft.

Oh its coming, Biden is working on cleaning up the mess Trump left.

The economy is already feeling the Biden Bounce.
Yep, let's keep selling weapons to people bombing civilians in Yemen, and ignore it because rich people's stocks are doing well.

So you're okay with the Biden Admin's relationship with MBS?

Good to know.

You think that is something new

Good to know.

Why do you jump to conclusions, and put words in others mouths. You do that often.

You should shut up.

It was Trump who gave MBS the pass over the murder of a journalist, Biden at least did some token effort.

No, it's not new. It's what happens when we elect elderly draft dodging racists to the Presidency. But that doesn't mean that selling weapons to countries that are specifically using them to kill brown people is ok or should be dismissed.

The US also sells weapons to kill white Europeans, think of the Kosovo conflict, its a buisness. Race has zero to do with the motives in selling.

He's still selling weapons to people in this conflict. Ending it is not on his agenda.
Biden didn't sell to them those weapons. Trump did. In the last months of the Trump administration, Israel reached deals with the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco as part of the accords. A legislative effort to stop the sales failed in December, as Trump's fellow Republicans in Congress backed his plans. The Trump administration then finalized the massive sale to the UAE on Jan. 20, about an hour before Biden was sworn in as president.

And Biden refused to cancel these contracts. He canceled others, but not these. He must be as big a fan of the atrocities in Yemen as Trump was. Or maybe he doesn't care as long as there's money to be made.

If you wanted any further proof that they're going to spend four years being as ugly and dishonest as possible, all to get revenge because their corrupt bastard lost, look no further than this thread.....

Hell, I'm still waiting for Trumpcare.

Yeah, but see, that's fine because Trump was "just joking", Obamacare is "socialism", and Joe Biden is thinking about wearing a tan suit.

He got more accomplished there than any modern President but this statement is unserious hyperbole and to be dismissed.

"The Biden administration announced the review in late January and the UAE said then it had anticipated the review and welcomed joint efforts to de-escalate tensions and for renewed regional dialogue.
The State Department spokesperson said on Tuesday the estimated delivery dates on the UAE sales, if implemented, were for after 2025 or later.
The government anticipated "a robust and sustained dialogue with the UAE" to ensure a stronger security partnership, the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
"We will also continue to reinforce with the UAE and all recipients of U.S. defense articles and services that U.S.-origin defense equipment must be adequately secured and used in a manner that respects human rights and fully complies with the laws of armed conflict," the statement said.
The Biden administration is also reviewing its policy for military sales to Saudi Arabia, including some Trump-era weapons deals, in light of the Saudi involvement in Yemen and other human rights concerns.
It has not released the results of that review. In February, U.S. officials told Reuters the administration was considering cancelling past deals that posed human rights concerns and limiting future sales to "defensive" weapons."

This is a really weird position to say this thread is an example of things being ugly. I'd figure someone on the left would be in agreement that change needs to happen here. Weird. Also, while you're bringing up "tan suit gate" do we get to bring up "sitting on a couch gate" and "feeding gold fish gate"?

You act like the left isn't chock full of non-issue controversies.

To be fair, selling weapons to escalate the conflict in Yemen was also a Trump policy. Both Democrats and Republicans were celebrating Trumps arm sales and withdrawal from Afghanistan, which is why Biden is continuing these policies.

Months, you say, during which he did other big things he promised? Yawn.

"Yawn"? Really? I wonder if the Yemani family huddled in their mud hut as US missiles rain down are yawning?

It's still surprising to see self-described progressives so ambivalent towards third-world war zones.

It's almost like they only care about people groups who can help them politically.

What big thing did he accomplish? Please tell he it was the his goals of vaccine distribution that had already been achieved by the Trump admin when he took over on day 1.

Oh wow. Hasn't canceled any Trump arm sales. Jesus, it's actually worse than I thought. Thank you for the correction.

Real progressives care. These people are not progressives, no matter what they claim. Don't lump us in with them.
