A monitoring group has said that at least 60,000 people have died in Syrian government jails during the five-year conflict. Syrian government officials could not be reached for comment on the report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which cited sources in the security apparatus for the toll. The government has rejected similar reports in the past.

The Observatory's director, Rami Abdulrahman, said it had arrived at the number by adding up death tolls provided by sources in several Syrian jails and security agencies. He said more than 20,000 of them had died at Sednaya prison near Damascus. The Observatory said it had been able to verify the deaths of 14,456 people, 110 of them under the age of 18, since the start of the Syrian uprising in 2011.

U.N. investigators said in February that detainees held by the Syrian government were being killed on a massive scale.

In early 2014, a Syrian military-police photographer (code-name: Caesar) defected with photographic evidence of mass murder of prisoners by the Assad regime. Numbers inscribed on more than 11,000 bodies in 55,000 photographs said to emerge from the secret jails of Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, suggest that torture, starvation and execution are widespread and even systematic ... each case logged with bureaucratic detail.

I was under the impression that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights was one man operating out of a closet in London. Please cite some reference to its' legitimacy as an independent organization.

The Assad regimes inhumane crimes have been well documented.

Like father, like son. He is beyond despicable.

Assad is a sick ****.

Nancy Pelosi said Assad is a standup guy.

Both Assad and ISIS is well aware of the western media logic. That Assad does everything he can to deny and hide the evil act he does. Because he want the west to accept that his regime stay in power. While ISIS want to strike fear into their enemies and get as much attention as possible. So that enemy forces in the ME will flee instead of fight, western politician propose harsh meausers against all muslims like for examle banning all muslims from entering USA and ISIS can recruite more followers. So ISIS both atack western civilian target as well as broadcast their evil deeds done in the Middle east to the rest of the world. That both Assad and ISIS know that 130 killed in Paris by ISIS will get much more attention and consequences then thousands of people killed in Assad torture chaimbers hidden from the eyes of the world.

If you can't find a way to blame Israel there is no story here!

Well obviously we need to move forward with the Obama doctrine with respect to Syria.

You know, help install and support hardline Islamic leaders in every ME Nation that doesn't have one yet.

We'll call it spreading the principles of democracy and liberty.

Anyone from the Muslim Brotherhood will do

i don't like her, but that's a bit of an exaggeration.

No it's not. Hillary supports policies of overthrowing leaders and then allowing terrorists to take over. That's really unforgivable. If you think 60k people are bad, wait until ISIS becomes the head of the Syrian government. That's what Hillary wants.

The Obama/Clinton foreign policy.

So many people are in the dark when it comes to Obama's ME Foreign policy objectives.

i don't support interventionism, as it causes these things to happen. for example, the mistake of WWI led to WWII and its horrors. however, the people who move in to become monsters during the chaos are a different kind of evil.

Hillary supports mass murder on a scale much larger than Assad ever considered. With her full support and approval, the amount of people mentioned in the thread title are killed in the US every two weeks. She is far worse than Assad.

Actually the picture you show is, as painful as it might appear, quite tame compared to the ones in Appendix A of the report linked in the article.

But it must be noted that the elected dictator's people have been doing that type of interrogation since way before the rebellion started. It has been standard practice from what I hear since the father took office. That is why it is so embarrassing that we never did much to help remove the regime and even now do not demand Assad stand trial in an international court.

The pictures Caesar smuggled out of Syria were brutally horrific.

Before the rebellion, Air Force Intelligence was notorious for torture and murder. There were always mutilated bodies at Syrian AFI facilities.

IIRC, Syria was a key participant in the C.I.A. extraordinary rendition program (black site).

Oh please. Spare me your faux outrage...

If the allegations you make are true, they should definitely be punished. They would certainly have been illegal by US law and not desired by even the most hard nosed of interrogation experts let alone the political leaders. You see, that is part of the difference. The other part is that in Syria a statement like yours here would put you into a jail, where you would be made to the subject in one of those pictures along with the tens of thousands others that have already gone that way.
