By KELLEY SHANNON
Associated Press Writer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Best-selling author and columnist Molly Ivins, the sharp-witted liberal who skewered the political establishment and referred to President Bush as "Shrub," died Wednesday after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 62.
David Pasztor, managing editor of the Texas Observer, confirmed her death.

The writer, who made a living poking fun at Texas politicians, whether they were in her home base of Austin or the White House, revealed in early 2006 that she was being treated for breast cancer for the third time.

More than 400 newspapers subscribed to her nationally syndicated column, which combined strong liberal views and populist-toned humor. Ivins' illness did not seem to hurt her ability to deliver biting one- liners.

"I'm sorry to say (cancer) can kill you but it doesn't make you a better person," she said in an interview with the San Antonio Express- News in September, the same month cancer claimed her friend former Gov. Ann Richards.

To Ivins, "liberal" wasn't an insult term. "Even I felt sorry for Richard Nixon when he left; there's nothing you can do about being born liberal _ fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed," she wrote in a column included in her 1998 collection, "You Got to Dance With Them What Brung You."

In a column in mid-January, Ivins urged readers to stand up against Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq.

"We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war," Ivins wrote in the Jan. 11 column. "We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!'"

Ivins' best-selling books included those she co-authored with Lou Dubose about Bush. One was titled "Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush" and another was "BUSHWHACKED: Life in George W. Bush's America."

......I guess she got BreastWhacked.....any who.....R.I.P....

Whether you agreed with her viewpoints is irrelevant. That's a bit harsh don't you think?

Oh, what article was that? It doesn't sound like her at all.

I didn't know she was sick with cancer. I completely disagreed with her viewpoints, but it is always sad to see someone struck down by disease.

Again, it's too bad that she has died from a horrible disease. But you are correct that she could write some very sickening things about the people she chose to hate - the troops included.

Why does it matter? Because I will never believe it until I see it. She was too smart to say anything like that, and it wasn't her style. I've been looking at a Molly Ivins archive, reading article after article. All of them were supportive of the troops. For example:

"I would hope the right would at least be concerned over the damage being done to the American military by this war. Morale, my ***. Excuse me, but our government doesn't even seem to be able to pay these people on time. Not to mention stretching them past the breaking point in Iraq, leaving them without adequate mental care when they come home, endlessly extending their tours, bribing them to re-up, and so forth and so on. Then, of course, something like Haditha happens, and they all get a black eye out of it."

Molly Ivins would never have said the troops are "murderers and torturers." Prove me wrong.

You don't remember. The date doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that you can't prove it. So you exaggerate in order to make a phony point about someone whom you merely disagree with.

I'd like to see a link. Or at least a quote.

Molly always brought a smile to my face.

R.I.P.

In truth Cold Dirt, you disagree with anyone who has an opinion that differs from yours.
From your point of view, anyone who has such opinions should never be permitted to publish any kind of dissent, doubtless you would be in favor of such ppl being compelled by law not to be able to publish their thoughts.
You and the others who form the Miltary might of the US are there to take any orders given you by your Commanders, their orders come down from the C-in-C (Commander in Chief).
You seem to be ignorant of the fact that many of your comrades and our relatives died so as to permit us Free Speech.
You may vilify the memory of this Lady, but you are unable to sully her reputation.
It would be far better that you recall the date this publication was supposed to have taken place as well as the Newspaper in which you say it was published.
As you are unable or unwilling to do this, as well as unable or unwilling to provide a link.
The best you can do (though all know you are incapable of admitting your error) is appologise.
I have not read any American who insults the troops.
I have met hundreds of Americans who (quite correctly in my opinion) classify President Bush as having the brains and intellect of a Shrub.

"This is America? While White House lawyers were arguing about what separates torture from legitimate 'coercive interrogation techniques,' the following was taking place: Prisoners were hanged for hours or days from bars or doors in semi-crucifixions; they were repeatedly beaten unconscious, woken and then beaten again for days on end; they were sodomized; they were urinated on, kicked in the head, had their ribs broken, and were subjected to electric shocks.

Now who would have done this? Is Bush watching over these prisoners? No the US Marines and US Army are......which are the "troops"....btw, most of this crap are lies to begin with......

The reports kept coming: Dec. 30, 2004, "Released Moroccan Guantanamo Detainee Tells Islamist Paper of His Ordeal," reported the Financial Times. "They watched you each time you went to the toilet; the American soldiers used to tear up copies of Koran and throw them in the toilet. ... " said the released prisoner.

This was proven to be a total BS lie.......that she uses to attack the troops

"Some Muslims had pork or alcohol forced down their throats; they had tape placed over their mouths for reciting the Koran; many Muslims were forced to be naked in front of each other, members of the opposite sex and sometimes their own families. It was routine for the abuses to be photographed in order to threaten the showing of the humiliating footage to family members."

More attacks against the troops

AlterNet: Don't Blame Newsweek

Boy if you call this supporting the troops....I would hate to see how you liberals hate the troops because I dont see much of a difference......but we all know this "I support the troops but not their mission" bull$hit is exactly that....a big pile of $hit lies told by a bunch of anti Americans......

I know it and so does the majority of the troops....why do you think that over 65% of the military voted against liberal democrats?

here the bitch call those who torure "without saying the troops" Nazis......

I hope this bitch had a long painful death

NO ONE blames the troops for what they were forced to do, and least of all, Molly Ivins. In this article, Molly explains "who would have done this," and she isn't blaming the troops. She blames those who AUTHORIZED and ORDERED these actions:

Molly Ivins Cageprisoners.com - serving the caged prisoners in Guantanamo Bay
Get your minds around it. Our country is guilty of torture. To quote myself once more: "What are you going to do about this? It's your country, your money, your government. You own this country, you run it, you are the board of directors. They are doing this in your name. The people we elected to public office do what you want them to. Perhaps you should get in touch with them."

In another article that I quoted in an earlier post, Molly wrote, "Then, of course, something like Haditha happens, and they (meaning, the troops) all get a black eye out of it." Do you not understand that she didn't blame the troops for the atrocities in Haditha? She blamed those who put the troops in an intolerable situation.

I read a story about an Iraq veteran who was forced to either participate in or witness torture. Pictures were found on her computer of a torture victim. When she returned to the US, she went off to live alone, and every weekend, she got a new tattoo until her entire face and body were covered. She was literally scarred for life by her experience. Critics of the war think it is unfair to ruin the lives of soldiers in a bogus war waged by deceit. I wish you could understand that, and stop hating those who have only the best interests of the troops at heart.

Look, I couldn't stand her viewpoint because in most ways, she believes exactly the opposite of what I do. However, as my father died from cancer I am quite sensitive to the disease. It pains me that ANYONE has to pass away in this manner. My heart and prayers go out to her and her family. Hopefully, we will learn more about this terrible disease so that we can someday say that it has been conquered and discussions like this don't have to take place.

Cold Dirt, you are one sick puppy. Perhaps you should consider some therapy as it seems you do need help. The hatred that you feel is awfully scary.

Rest in peace, Molly. You were a true patriot.

You hope she died a long painful death because she had a differing opinion? And you accuse liberals of being whackjobs? That's hilarious.

Actually she didn't.

She said that the rest of the world might start to.

Molly Ivins said:
And do not pretend to be shocked when the world seriously begins comparing us to the Nazis.

Your hatred has made you start seeing things, and believing whatever it is that you want to. Don't give in to your hatred, Cold Di. That will lead to the dark side.

Here is something Molly actually said about the troops:

1/12/2007: "Make our troops know we're for them and trying to get them out of there."

Molly Ivins was a political humorist, who made fun of Texas politicians. Whether it was GW Bush or Ann Richards, Ivins had the ability to make people laugh at them. Liberal? Conservative? She was pretty even handed, and made fun of them all. She is noted for giving Bush the name "Shrub", which has stuck ever since.

During the 2004 Democratic primary, she was asked who would win. She replied that Bush was beatable, but that Bush might win anyways, due to Kerry. She said that Kerry was an intelligent boring stiff, a boring stiff who knew the issues, but still a boring stiff. The way she said it was hilarious.

Ivins did criticize the Iraq war, but I never saw an article from her that called the troops murderers and baby killers, as you claim. She did call out specific troops for Abu Ghraib, and other atrocities, but guess what? So did the military, who charged them. You going to call the military troop haters too?

All in all, your response is just another in the many flamefests we have come to know you for.

She was a partisan bitch.......That said I am sorry to hear of her passing..........May she rest in peace..........
