India: Modi announces repeal of controversial farm laws

Over a year of protests pays off for Indian farmers. Modi has announced he will repeal the farm laws that started the waves of protests. This might be because the unpopular laws made his party unelectable in some rural regions that faces local elections soon.

Wow, a good news story from India. I wasn't expecting that!

Government produce boards are a tricky issue. When producers are low on literacy and some only have tiny amounts to sell, boards are definitely the best. However when there's an export market, boards serve the domestic market (keeping prices down, good for consumers, bad for producers) reducing the total return and giving a boon to foreign buyers. India with simple production methods turns out surpluses or deficits of any one product, year by year. They should make the boards smarter, guarantee board prices to all farmers, while also allowing premium producers to sell directly to foreign markets. Of course it's not easy, but maybe next time mr. Modhi?
