WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Saturday that President Donald Trump told him he had “never suggested firing” the chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve.

Mnuchin said in a tweet that Trump had told him that he “never suggested firing” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Trump also told Mnuchin he did not believe he had the right to fire Powell.

That's basically an announcement that he's going to fire Powell. The stock market should react well to that.

Edit: Renato Mariotti takes it one step further:

"If the markets think that the U.S. president can and will fire the Fed Chair whenever he dislikes a rate hike, that will really hurt our economy."

So yes, just the prospect that Trump may fire Powell will hurt the market. Which is really interesting when you think about it: Trump really does seem invested in the idea of a strong stock market since that's one of the last few arguments he has in support of him. For a guy who's so invested in a strong stock market, he sure does seem to enjoy creating situations that drive the market down.

Hold on. Let me get this straight. The President's Treasury Secretary actually received tweet from the President saying he "never suggested" firing the Fed Chairman. Completely from out the blue? Why? Unless he actually did and now wants' his people to cover his ass for him. Which is monumental a task because he has such a yuuge ass.

The chances of Trump firing Powell are the same as Trump firing Sotoymyer or Kagen...

FYI the reason why stocks fell this week is Powell.

He is responsible for about 1,000 points in the dow. If he gave a more dovish statement, the stock market would be closer to flat this week or maybe even up.

Mnuchin says Trump told him he 'never suggested firing' Fed chairman

Wait a minute. Steve Mnuchin reports that Trump told him that he (Trump) "'never suggested firing' Fed chairman." That Trump says he didn't do so is plenty reason to think Trump did indeed suggest firing Fed chairman.

Why is Mnuchin telling us what Trump said Trump never suggested to Mnuchin? Does anyone else find that bizarre from jump?

But notice how many people will claim otherwise, because it suits their agenda that Trump is a defective who must be cashiered to save America.

They are willing to burn America down to burn Trump out.

ASSHOLES

Removal of members of the Federal Reserve can only be done for cause. The fact that they don't do what the president wants is not cause.

You are right. I read an article on CNBC that says if trump fired Powell the market would spiral out of control.

Such a dishonest report.

Trump displays he is lacking knowledge in so many areas, it's not even funny anymore.

He's also not lacking in many areas according to 81% of Republicans.

Btw, it's just wishful hearsay and thinking coming from the left that Trump will fire Powell.
IOW, more :bs from the loony left.

Which begs the question what is it that Republicans are lacking that they can't see this ever growing steaming pile of a mess.

It would appear that you gave zero critical thought to my post above as your refutation is nothing but a red herring.

Interesting that you mention "red". Judgement day is coming.

Love the attempt at your avoidance by the creation of another logical fail.

I have all night.

The cookies, fudge have been made, and the presents are wrapped.
Sitting before a roaring fire watching the Chargers vs. the Ravens...

Go, my friend. ;)

In a normal world yes, but in Trump Bizarro world not so much. You know, kind of like Mexico paying for the wall...then US taxpayers have to pay for the wall....no wait: Mexico is paying for the wall through the USMCA (but no details as to how). My favorite was one suggested by a poster here: cutting foreign aid to Mexico will pay for the wall. It's like a three card monte for policy making.
