Any thoughts on the Romney Doomsday Scenario?
Goes something like this:

Runs in the General Election.
Gets enough key states to cause remaining Rep and Dem candidates in tie in the Electoral College.
The election thrown to the House of Reps
Republican majority so they end up voting for Not-Donald.
Presto!!!
MITT IS IT !!!

I want what you're smoking.

Seriously any plan that pins it's hopes on something as unlikely as an EC tie is doomed to failure out of the box. And that's before we begin discussing the fact that Romney at this stage of the game probably couldn't pick up a single state.

Unlikely. Name 1 state that Hillary is likely to carry that Mitt would win as a third party candidate. Not only THAT, it would likely put a number of red states into play, because a third party Republican would probably not have any effect on Democratic voters, but would split Republican voters such that red states that are more "pink" than red could likely tip to Hillary.

Mitt is ****.

And less we forget, Crazy Bernie is still out there.

Doesn't sound like anything that could actually happen.

By the way...a "tie" is not necessary. All that would have to happen is for neither to get a majority in order for it to be thrown into the House of Representatives for resolution.

And since it is a vote by state rather than members there...it is almost certain the Republicans will have enough votes to put a Republican in. I doubt it would be Romney...and although he claims not to be interested, it might be Paul Ryan.

But as I said...very unlikely. (Egad, in this election, how I hate to say something like that.)

Well, he hasn't filled his form 2 paperwork with the FEC yet so......................

The only people Romney might appeal to are the "Not Clinton/Not Trump" ones who are willing to throw away their vote on a candidate who has no chance of winning. In other words, establishment republicans. By very nature of being establishment, I seriously doubt many would be inclined to a symbolic vote, or buy the unlikely scenario offered in the OP. Consequently, it seems very unlikely that Romney could draw enough votes, even in key states, to affect the end results one way or another. I expect Gary Johnson might affect key states more than a decidedly establishment republican, who couldn't beat a very vulnerable POTUS with official republican backing, going rogue.

Now, if Sanders ran on the Democratic Socialist ticket, the story might be different.

No... just, no.

The only way for Romney to even run in the General is as an Independent, but his ideology and history of losses suggests appealing to very few Independents. He would have to count on taking Republicans who intend to stay home and watch Hillary win because they do not like Trump. That number of voters cannot be that high. Establishment would be that much further out of control.

If follows it is not plausible for Romney to upset the Electoral College counts. I cannot think of a single state where Romney would pull off enough to gain a single Electoral vote.

Even Ross Perot back in 1992 pulled off almost 20 million votes, something like 19% of the popular vote, but did not pull off a single state majority and ended up with zero Electoral College votes. *Zero*

Think about that when conjuring up a plan for Romney to steal enough votes from Trump... and it not impact Hillary very much at all. She still wins.

Zero chance of that happening. A Romney run would guarantee virtually every state goes to Hillary Clinton. If a republican runs third party it would only be to try and get anti-trump republicans to show up and vote so they have a snowball's chance in hell of keeping the Senate and the House.
