An engineer with a Vancouver logging company, who was charged by a mother grizzly bear yesterday morning on the B.C. Central Coast, is "extremely lucky" to be alive, says a conservation officer.
George Knoll, who works with A&A Trading, was flagging trees for logging along a creek at Burke Channel near Bella Bella.
Due to the sound of the rushing water, he didn't hear the bear and her cubs in the bush — and she didn't hear him — until they were very close, said Sgt. Len Butler of the Conservation Officer Service.
When they discovered each other, the bear charged uphill, biting the man in his torso and arms as he shielded his face, Butler said.
"Fortunately he was able to kick the sow off — kicked it in the face several times. The sow came back again. He kicked it again and the sow left," he said

Likely not familiar with Grizzly bears, you may need to know it is extremely rare to see one, and almost never do people escape an attack alive.
It is widely known that you can shoot a grizzly with a large caliber weapon and simply make it mad, or madder. They are huge creatures whose claws can tear open the roof of a car. It is a miracle he lived and that his kicking didn't make her angry enough to introduce the cubs to a new menu item.

I hope they don't kill her. One of the unfortunate and despicable things that happens when beast meets man and defends her cubs or whatever (just being what she is...bear or cougar), is that men go back, hunt her down, and kill her. When the animal didn't do anything wrong. Wild animals don't normally attack for funsies. Man does.
Shoot into the chest with a high velocity rifle if you can, a magnum revolver will work in a pinch. My neighbors found this out the hard way 3 years ago...
 wow.. just black bears down here in Florida..which get my utmost respectLikely not familiar with Grizzly bears, you may need to know it is extremely rare to see one, and almost never do people escape an attack alive.

Speaking on behalf of the momma bear -- she was not hungry.
She was just defending her cubbies.

ah you can try....me, I have seen a grizzly from a safe distance, I'm turning around very slowly, removing my pack and dropping it and walking away till its clear to run. When running go down hill as steep as you can. Their front legs are shorter than back legs and they go head over heels easily. Not that I want to find out.
