Likely not familiar with Grizzly bears, you may need to know it is extremely rare to see one, and almost never do people escape an attack alive.

It is widely known that you can shoot a grizzly with a large caliber weapon and simply make it mad, or madder. They are huge creatures whose claws can tear open the roof of a car. It is a miracle he lived and that his kicking didn't make her angry enough to introduce the cubs to a new menu item.

A very fortunate fellow indeed to come out of that with just a few holes here and there.

I hope they don't kill her. One of the unfortunate and despicable things that happens when beast meets man and defends her cubs or whatever (just being what she is...bear or cougar), is that men go back, hunt her down, and kill her. When the animal didn't do anything wrong. Wild animals don't normally attack for funsies. Man does.

Shoot into the chest with a high velocity rifle if you can, a magnum revolver will work in a pinch. My neighbors found this out the hard way 3 years ago...

We generally don't do that, unless it happened in a built up area and lives were at risk, and even then we try to capture and release.

I have only ever seen two, one at a distance and another on the other side of a fast running stream where it wasn't likely to cross. They are magnificent creatures, so huge and move with such grace.

This guy was more than lucky

ah you can try....me, I have seen a grizzly from a safe distance, I'm turning around very slowly, removing my pack and dropping it and walking away till its clear to run. When running go down hill as steep as you can. Their front legs are shorter than back legs and they go head over heels easily. Not that I want to find out.

 wow.. just black bears down here in Florida..which get my utmost respect

Speaking on behalf of the momma bear -- she was not hungry.

She was just defending her cubbies.

actually a bear would have to be starving to eat man. They are in the pig family [you can get rickets eating bear - it takes like pork] and omnivorous as we are, so the attraction would be very low for them.

Almost all bear attacks occur because of cubs, and/or having disturbed it or threatened it.

Respect any bear...

Wow, brings back memories of when i was 15 and went camping with may dad to the gulf coast side. It was when I saw my first bear! It retrospect it was about the size of a big dog.

This is the opposite of florida, there is no even ground, all mountains that go straight up. It is wilderness, people die just minutes from where I sit every year because they were not prepared to deal with the terrain and wilderness. Everything gets big. To make matters really interesting we have mountain lions too, and many hiking trail is signed on what to look out for and what to do [the opposite of a bear, you make yourself as big as possible and make a lot of noise. I have never seem one but I have seen a Bighorn, just a short ride from this part of the city.

It came through the front door, after it couldn't get into the trash cans that were locked up. The black bears are a problem here too, but there's no arguing with a griz...

Reminds me of that documentary movie Grizzly Man (2005) - IMDb about a man and his girlfriend trying to live with bears in Alaska and ends up getting eaten by them...

Don't climb a tree. Black bear follows you up, Griz shakes you out of it.

Only thing is to walk backwards and whistle dixie. No guarantee though.

How do you tell the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat?

Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper spray.

Yea... I've heard some bad things about Grizzly attacks. This one guy I was reading about literally had the top of his face crushed so badly by a Grizzly's jaws that his brain collapsed into his sinus cavity. It was actually the only reason he survived (though his eyes were basically a complete loss).

If I ever go hiking in bear country, it's probably going to be with one of these.

Shattered wrist and forearm? Probably.

Dead bear? Definitely.
