I kind of prefer the fence design the Minutemen have suggested.

The cameras and electronic gizmos are sexy, but can be taken out fairly easily. There's no substitute for manned patrols, even with a good fence.

The purpose of the fence is not to stop all illegal crossings. It would be great if that were possible, but it's not. The purpose is to cut crossings way down, and slow down the ones who have the resources to get through it anyway, enough that the Border Patrol can get there and take care of them.

The fence our guys built on April 29 was obviously not intended to stop all crossing attempts - it was pretty paltry. Its purpose was to publicize the fact that there are a lot of people willing to put time and effot into building SOMETHING to keep illegal crossers out.

Donations sent for the Minuteman fence project, are spent on the one in the design above, not quickie jobs thrown together in a weekend like the April 29 one. The people who showed up to build that one, paid for it themselves.

Three things are needed to secure our souther border:

1.) Build a good fence.
2.) Man it adequately.
3.) Prosecute employers who hire illegal aliens.

That would work, but I prefer old-style stone walls. And not just on out southern borders, but also on our northern borders. We're at war and we can't just trust a line in the sand, if you take my meaning.

Yes, Un-American. The term fits perfectly in this situation. Anyone in this country who feels that they are "entitled" simply due to birth do not understand that American values are not free. Little-Acorn, nice plan where'd you find it? It'd definitely be better with at least one concrete barrier in it though, Israel's looks much more formidable. Patrols shouldn't be too much of a problem, after all the military are on the federal payroll anyway, better to have them out there than sitting around or playing wargames. I'm pretty sure the guys and gals over in Baghdad would prefer a border posting to what they're doing at the moment.

It's true that a solid concrete barrier added to the design, would look formidable, and this might have some positive efect in the effort to get people to stop crossing the border illegally. But it might also have bad effects - a concrete wall supports a ladder to get over it, better than concertina wire does. Plus, you can't see through it. One of the functions of the proposed fence, is to give the Border patrol time to get to the scene of people with enough resources to defeat the fence, before they can successfully cross. A concrete barrier would greatly hinder the BP finding them in time, and would give the crossers tons more time and conncealment to do their thing. So a concrete barrier would have both pluses and minuses. It's the designers' considered opinion that the design as it is, gets the job done the best way possible, of giving the BP time and ability to zero in on the few groups that are able to get through it.

Sure, parts of the little fence we put up near Campo, CA could be gotten through with a large pair of linesmen's pliers. That fence's goal was not the same as the posted design's. The little fence was put up to publicize the fact that people want the border secured , enough that they are willing to put in their own time, money, and sweat to help do it. The posted design will actually do the closing, effectively and for moderate cost.

The double fences and ditches would be better for functionality, but a wall just looks more intimidating. Especially with turrets (watchtowers) every 50-100 ft. And about the ladders, you just pour hot tar down those. And the others who actually manage to get over the fence should be herded up like cattle and have nets thrown over them. Then just automatically deport them to southern Mexico. They'll think twice before starting another trek on foot.
Also, a mine field should be placed on the Mexican/Canadian sides.
