SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A new state bill would give kids two options with their meals at restaurants—water or milk.Senate Bill 1192 would make water or milk the default drink for kids meals in a push to reduce obesity and access to sugary drinks for children.
The bill passed the Assembly and is on its way to Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk. If he signs it, California would be the first state in the nation to have such a law.

My sig is proving too accurate, it's scary.

In most high schools in California soda is prohibited from being sold in the snack vending machines.

It doesn't stop students from bringing soda from home.

However, attempting to curtail what is offered to children as a default drink in a restaurant is over the top.

I'm not much of a soda drinker but when my children were little and we went out to eat rootbeer or sprite was a treat for them.

But but but but......SOCIALISM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bill would not prohibit a restaurant’s ability to sell, or a customer’s ability to purchase, an alternative beverage if the purchaser requests one.

True - read a bit further:

The bill would make a violation of its provisions an infraction, but would make the first violation subject to a notice of violation. Under the bill, the 2nd and 3rd violations would be punishable by fines of not more than $250 and $500, respectively.

By imposing additional duties on local enforcement agencies and by creating a new crime, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program.

What the heck does this mean??

The California Constitution requires the state to reimburse local agencies and school districts for certain costs mandated by the state.

Statutory provisions establish procedures for making that reimbursement.

WHAT???

In other words, why, how does Cali get to stick their nose into what children eat, period?

TANF/EBT has no restrictions on food purchases!

Then what is the point of the bill?

The point of the bill is to cut down the amount of soda that children drink. Childhood obesity is a legitimate concern and the consumption of sugary drinks is a big part of the problem. Anyone who wants to feed their kids soda is free to do so.

Water and milk are typically options for which a person could choose already. If parents can still ask for the soda, then how does that cut down on the amount of soda?

California is like that weird Uncle the rest of the relatives tell the little kids to stay away from...especially if he's been drinking.

The OP should take a page from the POTUS playbook; for every negative post, two positive posts should be made.......:peace

The kid's meal comes with milk or water. If the parent would like to feed their child soda, they can purchase it. Perhaps more parents may consider encouraging a healthier drink.

I am interested to know what effect it's had on obesity by banning it from schools. Seems like they should have some empirical data to offer

Then what is the point of the bill?

It only targets restaurants that include a drink with a kids meal. The only restaurants I can think of that do this is fast food joints (McDonald s, etc). I could be wrong, it's been a long time since I had to buy a kids meal for my kids. Reading the bill the server only offers one of the options in the bill (water, sparkling water, flavored water, unflavored milk, or a nondairy milk alternative). For anything else the customer would have to ask for it.

Then what is the point of the bill?

Then what use is it? What is the reason for the bill's existence?

It just makes the "default" choice milk or water. Soda is still available by request. In reality, the bill accomplishes very little other than making the children of a few lazy parents buy healthier beverages.

Deal with it.

Believe it or not a lot of Liberals are not like this even Bill Maher criticizes our liberal brethren for taking things too far. I doubt it will pass in the legislature there's a lot of moderates there
Do you perceive something extreme here?

If people want a single payer system, reducing obesity and all of the resulting chronic diseases, is practical. This is what has to happen if the government provides healthcare for its population. More government equals less freedom. This bill doesn't prevent parents from buying soda for their kids. It introduces the concept and practicality. More legislation will follow--

Yet.... and the fact is when they do finally ban it you as a good liberal will be all on board, it’s in the name of “public health” afterall.

The bill specifies: Water, sparkling water, or flavored water, with no added natural or artificial sweeteners. Which eliminates soda.
