Smith & Wesson announced Wednesday that it would rather stop selling its handguns in California than comply with the state’s new microstamping law, which “requires that all new semi-automatic pistols that are not already on the state’s approved gun roster have the microstamping technology,” The Washington Times reports.

However, independent studies have shown that microstamping is unreliable and ineffective for law enforcement, not to mention costly for manufacturers.

“As our products fall off the roster due to California’s interpretation of the Unsafe Handgun Act, we will continue to work with the NRA and the NSSF to oppose this poorly conceived law which mandates the unproven and unreliable concept of microstamping and makes it impossible for Californians to have access to the best products with the latest innovations,” Smith & Wesson President and CEO James Debney said, the Times reports.

“We’re being forced out of the state by the California Department of Justice,” Ruger CEO Mike Fifer told Guns.com. “This insistence on microstamping, which doesn’t work, is denying you your rights to have access to these guns.”

Ruger also announced this month that it will stop offering new semi-automatic firearms in California.....snip~

Seems the War on Guns is amping up. Here we have California and the District of Colombia going with the Micro-stamping of Weapons. Which does not work. Which you can bet now after hearing how Illinois wants ban Medical marijuana users from owning guns. I would expect the Liberal and Progressive bastions to pick up on that and try and to include it with their mental health definitions and the new ones they are writing. What say ye?

Re: Microstamping Law Forces Smith & Wesson to Stop Selling New Guns in California...

Yep, just no end to the war on liberty.

Unfortunately, as with the California law to issue driving privileges to illegal immigrants, this has republican support and was signed into law by a republican governor, though it has only recently cleared legal hurdles for implementation. Both parties are behind the attacks on our civil liberties and unless people ban together, Americans first, party second, this stuff won't be ending.

Re: Microstamping Law Forces Smith & Wesson to Stop Selling New Guns in California...

All a criminal would have to do to completely defeat this is any ONE of the following:

- Use a revolver
- Go to a firing range and collect a bag of random shell-casings, then litter those around the crime scene
- Collect his casings
- File his firing pin down
- Buy a non microstamped firing pin

So this is essentially one of the most defeatable laws in the history of firearm prevention. Almost as idiotic as the "we'll add GPS trackers to all guns" idea.

Re: Microstamping Law Forces Smith & Wesson to Stop Selling New Guns in California...

not to mention costly for manufacturers.

I imagine that is the point.

Just another example why those counties in the North part of the state want to separate from the insanity. I don't believe even the most Progressive Republican is as bad as the average Democrat. But the last couple of decades they sure have compromised to the point that sometimes it really is hard to find any differences.

The only difference between Neo Libs and neo Cons Vesper.....is, who will be in charge. ;)

Howdy MMC!! They're helping things along there too huh? The closeness in the two parties has been being called out since at least Wallace, and has been getting louder, registered independents are going to eclipse registered D&R's, and we have to make sure none of them try to run over and get in front of that.

Oh yeah, and explaining away the cost when involved in accident with an illegal too. Mark Kirk runs around with Boobie Rush and most of them here are saying they are Moderate. Which Joe Walsh of the Tea Party has been giving them some of what they like.....the Blues.

Illinois will have the same problem and the gun manufacturers will leave. Seems more and Blue States are starting to lose this Tax revenue.

There is another way to defeat the microstamping laws available to criminals. Just keep shooting the weapon, eventually through use it's proven to wear the stamp off, at that point, ballistics tests will ONLY show that a particular barrel pattern on the bullet is present(if the bullet remains intact enough to read) anyway. To trace back to the gun, hate to break this to Cali lawmakers, police will still have to do proper analysis and prove that a particular gun is traceable to a particular suspect and why.

Re: Microstamping Law Forces Smith & Wesson to Stop Selling New Guns in California...

They won't win a legal fight in the CA courts and the ultra liberal 9th circuit won't do anything they would have to take it all the way to the USCOTUS. that would be very costly in legal terms.

it would be cheaper for them just not to sell to CA. of course criminals don't care about these laws and still still buy their guns illegally.
that is what those moron congressmen either don't understand or are to stupid to understand.

the only people that will follow that law are law abiding citizens. a criminal isn't going to care one iota.

just like NY gun bans. criminals don't care. that is why they are criminals. someone that wants to go on a shooting rampage is still going to get their hands on the guns and cartridges no matter what laws you have in place.

taking guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens only puts them
1. at the mercy of criminals
2. it puts them at the mercy of the government.

Do we always get such good police work from LE?

Nothing is guaranteed, but then again if they become to reliant on suspect technology then it can only degrade.

But why is the gun in the OP a Walther and not a S&W?

Might have to do with being at Smith and Wesson gun show.

Microstamping is simply a ban on guns. California and D.C. will have a short period to enjoy their gun grab until the courts rule that this dictate violates the Second Amendment.

Shot show is not a S&W only show, every manufacturer are there.

Yeah, and the CEO of Ruger had chimed in to. So I expect there will be others to follow suit.

I think this is exactly what the micro-stamping law intended to do.

Then they will end up moving to Red States....do you think they should still attempt to sell anything to those in California or DC?

Nobody ever said the California Legislators are smarter than criminals now, did they?

I can barely tell the difference.

S&W makes certain Walthers here in the U.S. and is their distributor here in the U.S.

True.

The problem with politicians is that they don't like competition. That's they only reason the like to curtain crime.

I believe that may have changed
