This is insane, but I'm not sure if it really qualifies and an insanity defense.

TAWAS CITY, MI — Days after a 3-year-old girl’s body was found in a trash bag in northern Michigan, the child’s mother told an investigator she had hallucinated SpongeBob on her TV, commanding her to kill her daughter or face death herself.

Ryan Eberline, an investigator with Child Protective Services, testified to this during the Friday, Feb. 4, preliminary examination of Justine M. Johnson held before Iosco County District Judge Christopher P. Martin. Johnson, 22, is charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse related to the Sept. 16 death of her daughter, Sutton M. Mosser.

If that's not an insanity defense, I don't know what is.

I've certainly seen cases where a delusional defendant felt overwhelming kill commands. Even without a kill command but a certainty that the target was a part of multiple vast conspiracies against them. It's inherently irrational.

But a scenario of "kill your child or die"...

"the child’s mother told an investigator she had hallucinated SpongeBob on her TV, commanding her to kill her daughter or face death herself."

If that is true and it's the extent of the delusion, I cannot fathom the choice. I'm not entirely sure it is true, but then the site wants me to register to read the article and I'm lazy.

Doesn't anyone else find the rest of the interview a little off, not just the SpongeBob bit but right before that part...

"She told me that she didn’t remember the specifics of what happened at the time of what happened to Sutton, that she was experiencing hallucinations due to heroin withdrawal and not sleeping for approximately two weeks,” Eberline said. “She was getting hallucinations from the TV that had instructed her to take her daughter’s life or they would kill her.

“It was SpongeBob who was saying these things on the TV,” Eberline continued. “If she didn’t do what she did to her daughter they would kill her. She said she was afraid for her life and she had lost her mind.”

Heroin withdraw, not sleeping, all the sick puking and shit that come with withdraw, and all of a sudden... bad things happen.

So much for the insanity defense.

I'm watching SpongeBob burying a murdered health inspector as we speak. Seems a bit gruesome for the kids but...

Anything can be said as an Insanity Defense... it is up to the psychologists to determine if it is real or not. Past history, etc.

Being tired and coming off drugs is not insanity...

Which is why I said "so much for the insanity defense."

We literally agree, and somehow that is not enough for you. Why?
I was agreeing with you... my comment was based off of the title.

I always wondered about SpongeBob. Patrick doesn't seem right to me either.
