“What we had was a ballot initiative and we're responsible for looking at it and we can within 40 days take it up and vote on it”, said Republican Senator Rick Jones.

“Well we did that. Then that allows us to change it a little bit if we need to and we felt we needed to keep people working.”

Senator Jones told news 10 the changes will keep employers from turning to automation and job cuts.
So when Michigan workers are forced to come to work with pneumonia and everyone get sick and some people die... remember, Capitalism, folks!

Capitalism doesn't care who dies.

The solution is for the people on Michigan to vote in a democrat majority and repeal the changes the republicans have made. After that if the companies don't cut hours, resort to automation or ship out to a more business friendly state then we will know what the republicans said was fearmongering and nothing more. However the changes stay in place and no one dies then will know that what you said is nothing more than fearmongering.

We here in Michigan took a big step towards that goal by electing more Dems to the legislature cutting back on the big majorities Republicans held. Plus we took away the power to gerrymander from the legislature and that is what produced such lopsided numbers in the first place. You are going to see big changes in the composition of the Michigan legislature in the 2022 election after the citizens redraw all the districts.

Doing some quick math, based on a pay rate of $9/hour, one week of paid sick leave is worth $360 (if all of it is used and the worker is full-time). That is the equivalent of about a 2% pay raise or $0.18/hour higher pay. The worker would be better off with a $0.25/hour raise (just under a 3% pay raise) and simply taking unpaid time off for up to 5 days per year as need be.

I tried to explain this when a company (that I worked for in the past) offered us one week of paid leave instead of an annual pay raise. The employees would have felt insulted if given an annual pay raise of less than $0.25/hour yet acted like the (5 days/year) paid leave benefit was a great deal and voted to have paid leave.

The better deal for Michigan employees would be a mandatory annual pay increase based on CPI inflation such as the 2.8% COLA given on Social Security retirement benefits this year. A one time benefit of less than 2% is, as Nancy Pelosi put it, crumbs.

That is four years from now. Democrats could **** up royally and not gain anything.
