Following a decisive victory at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza former world champion Michael Schumacher has announced that he will retire from Formula One at the end of the current season. The Ferrari team have confirmed that he will be succeeded by Finland's Kimi Raikkonen moving to the team following a frustrating tenure at Mclaren Mercedes racing. FIAT president Luca di Montezemolo hinted that Schumacher will continue to work with the Scuderia in an as yet unconfirmed role, presumably in testing the F1 cars though a management position has also been mooted.
The victory at Ferrari's spiritual home circuit draws the already close 2006 Championship down to a two point margin between Schumacher and Renault's Fernando Alonso, with three races remaining. There can be no doubt that securing an eighth world title for himself and another constructors title for his Italian team would be the perfect end to the German's already glittering career, and would set a record that would be all but impossible for a successor to surmount.
