A former Canadian diplomat has reportedly been detained in China and his current employer says it is working for his "prompt and safe release".
The International Crisis Group said it was "aware of reports" of Michael Kovrig's detention.
Details are not yet clear. The news comes days after Canadian authorities arrested a top executive of the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei in Vancouver.
It is not known if there is a link between the two cases.

I have absolutely zero faith that Justin Trudeau and the Canadian government will come out of this ahead.
Maybe we should have ignored the US extradition request, huh? Trump's probably gonna back off on it anyway to placate China, tossing Canada under the bus.
But this is what allies do. Good ones anyway, not certain backstabbers.

This is Canada's battle. They shouldn't have arrested the daughter of a powerful Chinese executive.
Two things. I wondered if we would grant the Huawei bail, just to see if China grabs her so she can jump bail, secondly, China as expected, has taken this guy as a hostage.
IMO, this Huawei arrest’s timing is the deep state trying to undermine Trump making progress with China trade, denying Trump as positive accomplishment.
Leseee now! Canada could give up its' hostage and China will give up theirs. EVEN!

D'ya know why she was arrested in the first place?
Bank fraud and aiding a terrorist state.
Okay. She's changing planes in Vancouver. She has no charges against her in Canada. Why did the RCMP arrest her?
That information has yet to be released.

This woman is wanted by America because she was party to sending American technology to Iran through a subsidiary company, circumventing the American sanctions. Fraud, the US calls it. How in God's name does that add up to a 'deepstate' conspiracy?
And you can't grant her bail. She's in the Canadian court system until the extradition hearing. Doesn't it sound pretty cowardly to consider setting her free and tossing Canada under the bus for arresting her at your request?
The timing is suspect. They could have done it after the meeting at the airport.
?
What meeting?
The US wanted her for charges related to circumventing the sanctions against Iran. Canada arrested her when she was changing planes in Vancouver. Should that not have happened? Should Canada have known by some kind of telepathy that the US didn't want her arrested at this particular moment?
The arrest was coordinated with US authorities and she was arrested at the US's request.
Either way it doesn't matter now. What matters is what happens next.
Will she post bail and bolt?
And will China make trumped up arrests - AKA hostages.
This is part of how China learns it has to change if it wants to continue being a major trading partner.
