(CNN)Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent who considered his own presidential run this year, will endorse Hillary Clinton and speak at the Democratic National Convention, a senior Clinton official confirmed to CNN.
Bloomberg's plans were first reported by The New York Times. A senior Clinton campaign official and Bloomberg adviser Marc La Vorgna confirmed his plans to CNN.
"As the nation's leading independent and a pragmatic business leader, Mike has supported candidates from both sides of the aisle. This week in Philadelphia he will make a strong case that the clear choice in this election is Hillary Clinton," senior Bloomberg adviser Howard Wolfson told CNN.

The move by Bloomberg -- who left the Democratic Party in 2000, was elected mayor of New York City as a Republican and is now an independent -- reflects his desire to see Republican nominee Donald Trump defeated.
He could boost Clinton's efforts to reach independent voters, particularly those most concerned about the economy.
Bloomberg has allied with Democrats in recent years on several issues -- particularly gun control and climate change. He has rebuked Trump over his hard-line stance on immigration.

This is a very good endorsement IMHO, especially if he speaks at the Democratic convention, a republican figure of some stature who has gone in for Hillary. Which will not hurt her with the moderates. Hopefully this is the first of a few moderate republicans who will have the guts to say HELL NO to their nominee and support Hillary outright.

From what I saw Republicans crossed the line in their rhetoric towards Clinton last week. I imagine this will only help unify the Democrats and get people behind Clinton.

Bloomberg is a life long democrat who took the republican "tag" to run for mayor. He was never considered a republican, and is not very well liked by most New Yorkers outside of the city, and even less outside of the state.

If there are a dozen Americans who change their vote based upon Bloomberg's opinion I would be surprised.

Right the only way to get elected in such a beacon of conservatism like NY is to run as a Republican.....;)

Outside of NYC, the state is largely red when it comes to Hillary, and she would have lost her senate bid without the city.

So you are complaining because 80% of the state's population got its way over the 20% of the state that doesn't live in the NYC metro? That is neither here nor there though. You made the claim that Bloomberg had to run as a Republican to win as mayor in NYC. NYC is one of the most liberal cities on earth. The residents of upstate NY don't vote for NYC's mayor.

BTW, by all accounts Hillary Clinton was a very effective senator.

Not by my account.

This guy is about as bad as Obama.
He isn't independent everyone knows he is another liberal hack trying to
Push his ideology on other people.

He is about as far from republican as you can get and it has been know for a while.

His news company endorsed her long ago without using those words.

I'm not complaining about anything, that is just your own assumption as usual. Every voter in NYC knew he was a democrat, and why he switched......every one of them.

Well, who are the going to support, the anti-trade orange terror?

That's why I am not surprised. Of course, we will see more intelligent statements from the man, now that he needs votes from Clinton. Well, probably.

This is not going to really matter after the news that broke this afternoon. The party will be in emergency mode trying to pacify Sanders supporters/delegates.

One more thing Bloomberg is nothing but a RINO! He is not like by many in the republican party.

When you are trying to ride Giuliani's coat tails you do.

Awwww..did the mean old White guys hurt Hillary's feelings? Does she need a Waaambulance to escort her to a safe space?

After the Wikileaks dump of DNC emails mentioning (among other things) attempts of rigging the primaries for Her Majesty and how to target Sanders, i highly doubt that's going to happen!!

I live in Upstate NY. Clinton did nothing for upstate. She came here because it furthered her political career as she could easily win because there was not much competition compared to other states she was eyeing. She has never been, and will never be a New Yorker, even the upstate type.

A "republican" figure? Bloomberg is a lifelong Democrat. He changed his affiliation to Republican because he wanted Rudy Giuliani's job and knew the only way to win it was to pretend he was a Republican (just like Donald Trump is doing). As soon as he left office, he went back to being a registered Democrat.

That may be so, but he was a republican candidate and mayor.

Why do the opinions of people who had limited at best interaction with his politics matter? He is well liked by the people he governed. Shouldn't their opinions on him count more so than some plumber in Oklahoma?

Huh? Republican? He registered as Republican but he was never a Republican. No Republicans ever thought he was a Republican so it doesn't stick. It makes Democrats feel good though to think someone came to the dark side.

Bernie Sanders Supporters Chant ?Lock Her Up? in Philadelphia Protest Against Clinton - Washington Wire - WSJ

At a lively Sunday march in support of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, chants of “lock her up,” “Hillary for Prison” signs and t-shirts and calls for indictment were common among the most ardent supporters of Mr. Sanders, who arrived in Philadelphia to make their voices heard to the delegates attending the Democratic National Convention.

Seems like some Democrats feel the same way.
