Mexico apologises to Mayan people for historic abuses

Mexico aknowledges it's troubled history and the treatment of indigenous peoples. There might be a cynical reason, such as fishing for votes in upcoming local elections, but it's still good. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did in this case do the right thing.

Yes, and I expect Sweden to apologize for it's past Viking invader abuses

I want Egypt to apologize to the jews, Britain to apologize to...well, EVERYONE, Greece to apologize to Europe, and especially Itally...and vice versa, Japan needs to apologize to Okinawans, and the Chinese, Germany has to apologize to Europe a couple times over, China needs to apologize to Europe....

And on and on.

And MEXICO shouldn't be apologizing, SPAIN should be.

Does a current government apologizing for historical acts committed decades or centuries ago ... really have any meaning?

Mexico has post independence also treated it's Maya population badly. The last 200 years hasn't exactly been nice to the Mayas.
Yeah, another poster pointed out this is likely for recent stuff.

Both yes and no. In a way words are easy, and words are wind. Words seldom mean anything to the one saying the words. Words has meaning to the one recieving them. And at least an apology is a start, it's admitting that wrongs did indeed happen in the past.

They likely mean recent abuses. Like within the last 20 years.

.
I think its more of a bigotry thing. In most of these countries, the society is divided between light skinned and dark skinned, so even though they are of the same nationality, there's still a prejudice against darker skinned folk thats just beneath the surface.

There is a spanish word Casta that roughly can be translated to race (or lineage) in this context. It was a complicated ranking system of human beings into several "lineages" that was used in New Spain.

it's symbolic
does not cost a thing ... other than some humility
and might be viewed by the victims and others as authentic regret

Might? Sounds squishy? What's the benefit or value add? What if the group doesn't accept the apology?

As opposed to Trump cultists, who are nothing wrong with the atrocities that have been committed and are bewildered that anyone wouldn’t celebrate them.

Mexico is a shithole. They could apologize for the next 1000 years, and it will still be a shithole.

AMLO is normally a good president, he has been very based in calling out public health Nazis and Joe Biden.

But I don’t know what’s gotten into him with this. No country based on civilization should apologize for making degraded savages behave in a civilized manner.

It was a good thing their culture was destroyed during the conquest, it was very defective.

What a stupid thing to say. Mexico is a wonderful place to tour around. The geography is really diverse and the people are great.

They’re great because of Hernan Cortes

You say that like civilization is a gift. Civilization is a curse and everywhere it has been forced on primitive people it has ruined their lives.

Hernan Cortes? You really want to cite him as an example of the gift of civilization?
Yes. Through his genius, diplomatic prowess, attitude, and hard work he organized a military coalition to depose the wicked Aztecs who were literally sacrificing people to demons and force them under the crown of Spain, which led to their conversion to the True church and the salvation of their souls. He is a true hero.

Rousseau was at best a third rate intellect.

First off the Mayans and Aztecs had civilization, they built cities and had complicated trade networks and social hierarchies, they however had a wicked one ruled by human sacrifice to Satan and the Spanish ended that.
