Fox and republicans like McCarthy always need one enemy to steer their base, it's the Chinese this time. It's dangerous because it creates fear and animosity towards Asian Americans not just Chinese, as we've seen reported already when a man on a subway verbally attacked a man of Asian descent. This virus is the same 'corona' that caused SARS and MERS. Coronavirus is pretty common all over the world. This one is a deviation from the same virus. Several doctors are referring to it as 'Novel-Coronavirus' rather than Covid-19.

It is very common to refer to a (new) disease by its place of origin. For example, Lyme disease was named due to its origin in that Connecticut town. It was not called (deer?) tick disease out of some bizarre need to be more politically correct (woke?).

Well, at least we have one person checking in in favor of the double standard.

I can see that your understanding of what critical thinking means is non-existent. I would appreciate it if you would not change the context of my comment to suit yourself.

Trump is doing the same thing.

He has referred to the Corona virus as “chinese” every day this week.

McCarthy is only reading the talking points.

And Trumpsters seem to be angry that they’re being called out on this one even before the right wing ex disc jockeys get to repeat it!

That's very true, the same with Hong Kong flu in 1968 that killed between 1 to 4 million people. But that wasn't named the 'Chinese virus' because of course that would be racist. With Lyme disease, which by the way my uncle was one of the very first who contracted the disease, was named according to the first geological location it showed up. Again, not a detrimental name. It was intentional that it wasn't named 'Deer Disease' because that would target the deer population in general.

The World Health Organization (WHO) mostly works to reduce the physical toll of disease but the WHO has worked to reduce the insult and stigma inflicted by diseases named for people, places, and animals and they have new guidelines “for the Naming of New Human Infectious Diseases” which avoids putting a name on any new virus that may be detrimental, so they use more neutral, generic terms, such as severe respiratory disease or novel neurologic syndrome.

Man, you guys seem to be obtuse.

Man gets in trouble for tweeting chin ese virus...

But when the news plasters the words Chinese Virus in big bold letters as their headlines, its fine?

The Chinese have long been a boogeyman to exploit on both sides of the aisles. Republicans and Democrats have rammed Defense contacts through Congress since the 1990s with the idea that China is about to attack. The problem is that China's threat is geoeconomic, not military. And because of our insatiable need to keep the "free-market" and politics generally separate, largely since the 1970s, we rarely practice geoeconomics anymore. We have and continue to fail miserably to counter China's efforts to inject their influence into even our friendly governments.

What does that have to do with Trump, Fox and republican congressmen referring to this virus as the 'Chinese virus' ?

It's not a double standard. Context and change-over-time matters. Look at the dates:

1) Tweet = March 10 (yesterday)

1) Article = January 26
2) Article = January 17
3) Article = January 23
4) Article = January 28

Can we see how change-over-tie matters? Can we see how desperate you appear to defend right-wing media and some hateful Republican leadership? What is clear to see is that where once people saw a Chinese virus way back in January, it has been established that this is irresponsible. Hence, two months later, to include the Sacramento Bee, people calling this latest virus Chinese is as improper and deceitful as calling AIDs the African disease or the gay disease.

But since FOX News, with the uber 'tard Tucker Carlson leading the charge, along with some Republican politicians, insisting on labeling this a "Chinese" virus, FOX continues to defend itself. Once again we see where your world view is being manipulated and shaped by right-wing propaganda. If you just stopped clinging to the right-wing partisan nonsense and used your ability to reason and apply logic, you wouldn't keep falling for this trash.

Spanish Flu
West Nile Virus
Zika Virus
Ebola Virus (Ebola River, Africa)
German Measles
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome

I mean criminey, of all the ways for SJWs to signal they really don't know ****, this is one of the funniest. :lamo

*nonsense*

The idiotic media decided that they needed to be offended by a common naming practice and pretend that they and their fellow clowns weren't the primary perpetrators of the practice and demand and apology for something they do themselves.

In fact, even assuming they have a point (they don't, they're idiots), THEY owe an apology.

Nothing. I digress. I shall do it again:

You stated that "its the Chinese this time." But "this time" is only because the virus came out of China. Trump has made it one of his platforms to hammer at China as an enemy since his campaign trail. But when it comes to using xenophobia to promote a false sense of patriotism and nationalism, which is what you were saying, the Chinese have always been exploited. This goes back to the late nineteenth century; and it was the Chinese that was the actual source for the creation of the Border Patrol in the early twentieth century, not Mexicans. But the Chinese are merely categorized with the rest of the non-white (Western European) world. The Chinese, Eastern Europeans, Filipinos, Japanese, Africans, Mexicans, Iranians, Arabs. Notice that we never define our nationalism against those nasty Canadians; and we oonly did this with the French because they wouldn't help us screw up Iraq. And even after a war with Nazis, we had no real problem with Germans. But, oooooh those nasty Japanese and other Asians. This historical attitude is less a Party thing as much as it is a conservative thing.

Very true, although it occasionally gets screwed up. The flu of 1918, for example, most likely originated in a military base in Kansas before being transmitted to Europe and the rest of the world, but they still call it the Spanish Flu. In this particular case the virus appears to have originated in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, although Chinese officials are denying it. China is also the location of the latest outbreak of the Bubonic plague.

Identifying the origin of a virus or disease does not make anyone a bigot. Only the truly insane left believe such abject stupidity.

You blew your credibility outta the water in your first sentence. The left has been painting Trump as Satan personified since 2015, and it's prominently on display here daily by people like you. The idiocy of your hypocrisy is almost beyond words, but obviously not quite beyond them.

The idiotic media decided that they needed to be offended by a common naming practice and pretend that they and their fellow clowns weren't the primary perpetrators of the practice and demand and apology for something they do themselves.

In fact, even assuming they have a point (they don't, they're idiots), THEY owe an apology.

"They."

First of all, calling it a Chinese virus does imply that it's a Chinese problem. You can't get it. And Chinese is a people, not a location like West Nile or Ebola or Middle East, which impplies that anyone can get it. The Spanish Flu was named way back in 1918 and the German Measles meant "germane" as in skin, not German people.

Second, your use of "they" is the result of the fake news nonsense spewed by right-wing media outlets as a gimmick to promote themselves as the true media. The fact that you get worked up and how "they" owe you and others an apology means that right-wing media outlets have accomplished. Here:

2012 Study: They found that someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer 1.04 domestic questions correctly compared to 1.22 for those who watched no news at all.

2015 Study: A new study by Bruce Bartlett, a conservative economist, top official in the H.W. Bush administration and domestic policy adviser to Ronald Reagan, concluded that Fox News viewers tend to be less informed and engage in "self-brainwashing."

2016 Study: William Poundstone has done similar surveys, both of current events and with more general knowledge. "In my research too, Fox News viewers scored the lowest of over 30 popular news sources (though Fox viewers did at least score better than those saying they didn't follow the news)."

These are separate studies, spread out and conducted over years, and routinely coming to the same conclusions. Since Donald Trump became the U.S. president, Murdoch has shown near absolute support for him in his media empire, which includes FOX News as the anchor. Trump uses "fake news" too excuse himself from taking responsibility for himself and to brand himself as a victim. And FOX News absolutely loves using "fake news" to excuse their own very real propaganda machine. This is because conservative interest groups and the right-wing media are entirely responsible for hollowing out the GOP over the course of a couple decades. By 2016, they had pulled the center-right so far from the center, and smeared "the left" to such a degree, that they were able to pave the way for one of their own "birthers" to capture the hearts of their viewers. And today, people like you, refer to all the world's media as "they" because it doesn't tow the right-wing agenda.

And there it is. From Trump's lips or finger tips, and from FOX News propagandists, conservatives everywhere show how easily they can be manipulated into the script of the day. Still they insist that they think for themselves. It's one big circle jerk to make them all feel comfortable in their irrationality and manufactured seething hatreds.

Just going to stop your idiocy there. It is called the Chinese Virus because it started in China. It is called the German Measles not because it is a German problem but because it started in Germany. It is called Zika Virus because it started in the Zika Forrest, Uganda. It is called the Spanish Flu because it started in Spain. It is called the Ebola Virus because it started in the Ebola river basin, and so on.

All of these have infected well beyond their point of origin, and only a fool decides that what this news Cycle needs in more idiotic social justice nonsense.

He's 'Satan-like', not Satan himself, there's a difference. Lucifer didn't have a soul whereas Trump lost any semblance of a soul before he was 5.

Okay let me name some of the ways that the right, as influenced by Fox and Trump, has managed to undermine national security, create fear, instill a sense of hatred for Hispanics and people of color and elevated the status of people like Vladimir Putin and Mohammed bin Salman.

Remember the 'love letter' that came from Kim Jong-un? Remember how Trump proudly walked 20 steps into N. Korea to shake hands and have a photo op with a dictator that murders and imprisons innocent men, women and children? Remember how Trump expected he would get a Nobel Peace Prize for that? All that came out of that was more prominence and servility of the people of N. Korea to their Leader. Yes, it was great publicity, for Kim. North Korea had a visit from the very first sitting US president since the Korean War. Was elevating Trump's own status with N. Korea helpful to the United States? He thought so. Kim Jong-un was the enemy, remember how Trump threatened N. Korea with 'fire and fury'? He made them enemy #1 and then felt he had prevailed over N. Korea when he victoriously stepped over the 38th parallel. You believed it, right? This was a national security threat by giving N. Korea official acknowledgement by a sitting US president, it elevated the status of Kim Jong Un and made him stronger in the eyes of his people.

Now let me be clear about the specific departments and patriots to our country that have served the US unfailingly, fastidiously and devotedly for decades whom Trump has chosen to demonize, destroy or obfuscate into the mysterious 'deep state' just for your benefit. John Brennan, James Clapper, Andrew McCabe, Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, Alex Vindman, CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, Washington Post, Ambassador William Taylor, Fiona Hill, George Kent, Michael McKinley, and many others. These were all non-partisan career officials whom Trump described as 'deep state' or 'Obama hold-overs', it's simply not true.

What Trump has sought from the first day of his administration was to minimize the role of career officials. In the foreign service, 45 percent of the 166 ambassadors serving under Trump are political appointees chosen based on loyalty and campaign contributions, the highest rate in history. In short, Trump got rid of anyone who would disagree with him and appoint only 'yes' men to do his bidding, and that has been what's destroying us from the inside out.

Whereas, of course, the real Satan personified is Hillary Clinton. Every right winger knows that. You're just mad because the characterization fits Trump so much better.

It’s what they do.

The also routinely fall for previously discredited right wing memes.

Talk radio, Fox and the trash blogs all know that their audience has a very short attention span, knows next to nothing about history, world affairs or government, and is easily sold just about anything as long as it is packaged to confirm a pre existing belief set. They don’t remember (or choose not to), when one of their memes gets discredited. So they repeat it on cue.

Seen it called Wuhan Coronavirus, Chinese Coronavirus, Covid-19, Novel Coronavirus, and multiple variations from sources all over the globe.

Who gives a damn? The virus doesn't care where it came from, it just makes people sick and kills. We need to drop the petty nonsense and pull it together. This entire thread is so stupid.

Trump gives a damn, because he can demonize China and fear monger to his fans, while pandering to their prejudices.

Which is why he keeps trying to wrap China around it. You know that as well as anyone else here does.

This is a typical Trump play. We’ve seen his act for four years now.

Don't change the subject. You claimed the descriptive, "Chinese" was used to rile up Trump's base, but an even cursory look at disease descriptives shows the place of origen is a fairly common practice to identify them. Here are just a few of the many:

West Nile Virus. ...
German Measles. ...
Ross River Fever. ...
Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever. ...
Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever. ...
Marburg Virus Disease. ...
Lassa Fever.

You're just having a partisan fantasy.
