After a headline which leaves the impression that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made up, out of thin air, a program of up to 8 months of cash benefits for refugees in Massachusetts, as well as job placement help, it turns out that the benefits are actually found in Massachusetts’ own Office for Refugees and Immigrants website.
Labelling the self-confessed illegal border crossers “migrants,” a Business Insider article made viral by the MSN search engine announced “Migrants flown to Martha’s Vineyard on planes chartered by DeSantis received a misleading brochure that promised cash, job placement and more, lawyers say.”
The problem with the headline is it is not exactly misleading. The benefits are right on Massachusetts’ own immigration website. This is something the article did not mention.
Nevertheless, Boston’s Lawyers for Civil Rights, a liberal group, is calling for “a federal and Massachusetts criminal investigation into DeSantis’ decision to transport the migrants.”
In response to his political enemies, such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom saying that DeSantis should be charged with “kidnapping” or “human trafficking,” Florida officials say the illegal immigrants transported free to Martha’s Vineyard were given “multiple” opportunities to decline the trip,” and that some indeed did decline.
....
No sooner did the planes land in Martha’s Vineyard than the National Guard was called out to assist in relocating them off the island. Vineyard human services officials pleaded lack of space and resources, although at this time of year, the vacation destination has upwards of 200,000 hotel and other types of living units sitting empty.
Although publications such as the leftist Popular Information asserts that “The brochure says that migrants who arrive in Massachusetts will be eligible for numerous benefits, including “8 months cash assistance,” the brochure says no such thing, and is more of a general informational rundown of resources which may or may not immediately apply.
Several hit pieces on DeSantes have appeared, such as one from NPR, using first-name-only or anonymous immigrant sources. which claims the travelers were misled and told they were going to Boston.
But Popular Information says:
“DeSantis has been adamant that the migrants were not misled. He claims that migrants were provided with a map showing the destination was Martha’s Vineyard and describes the flights as “all voluntary.” Appearing on Fox News on Sunday Morning, Florida Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez (R) called allegations that the migrants were misled “categorically false.””
