McConnell blocks bill to reopen most of government

GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

1/17/19
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blocked legislation on Thursday that would have reopened most of the federal government impacted by the partial shutdown. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) tried to get consent to take up a House-passed bill that would reopen all agencies except the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which is at the center of the shutdown fight. But McConnell objected. This marks the third time that McConnell has blocked House-passed government funding bills in the past two weeks. Under Senate rules, any senator can ask for consent to vote on or pass a bill, but any senator can object. Roughly a quarter of the government has been shut down since Dec. 22, forcing roughly 800,000 federal employees to work without pay or be furloughed.

Kaine, whose state has a large population of federal workers, will force the Senate to be in session on Friday and Saturday. The Senate will also be in session Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week, though senators say votes currently aren't scheduled. Kaine is planning to ask for consent to pass the House package to reopen the government on each of the days, except Saturday. The move will force McConnell or another GOP senator to be on hand to object. "The first level of illogic we are in is we are punishing the workers and citizens who need services completely unconnected with the border and immigration reform issue," Kaine said on Thursday, about his request to move the package unrelated to DHS funding.

Two Republicans are entirely responsible for this continuing government shutdown ..... Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell.

Senator Kaine of Virginia will ask for a Senate vote on a House government funding bill (6 CRs) on the 18th (today), the 22nd, the 23rd, and the 24th.

That's at least four more Senate opportunities within the coming week for Trump and McConnell to end their record-breaking government shutdown that is now directly affecting 1 million Americans.

Senate GOP blocks bill to reopen Homeland Security

1/18/19
Senate Republicans blocked legislation on Friday that would have temporarily reopened the Department of Homeland Security. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) asked to take up a House-passed bill that would fund the department through Feb. 8. It's the third time Democrats have tried to bring up the stopgap measure. But Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) objected to the request "on behalf of the majority leader," referring to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). It's the third time McConnell has blocked the bill to temporarily reopen DHS, which is at the center of the shutdown fight. He's also blocked a bill that would reopen the rest of impacted department and agencies three times, most recently on Thursday.

Trump and McConnell are keeping the government partially closed and holding 800,000+ government workers hostage to their political demands.

No other nation on earth shuts down its government demanding a political win in order to reopen.

The shutdown is affecting far more than 1 million Americans. The TSA situation alone is directly affecting millions of passengers and the airlines.

I cannot figure out what realistic basis McConnell has to block these votes. The Senate doesn't work for the President. Hold the votes and if they pass, the President can veto them.

With that said, I obviously understand the political reason McConnell is blocking the vote, but still.

Yeah, when I think of true patriotism and sacrifice, I always think of Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump.

When I think of America men and women in uniform I always think photo-op.

That is the America we live in now.

The Dems need to get a better PR strategy in regards to these votes. There's no build-up, no anticipation. McConnell needs to feel some heat here, or he'll just continue to be a Trump lackey.

Yet we have dozens of people here saying this is all Democrat's fault.

You guys have short memories

Reid did the exact same thing in the Senate

Held bills from ever getting to floor of senate....

Held bills from ever getting to floor of senate....

So you agree with the tactic Reid used then right? Myself, I didn't which is why I didn't vote for Reid.

You seem to think because person A does something wrong that is makes it right for person B to do the same thing. There are plenty of people that get away with crime, does that make it somehow right for you to commit crimes?

iLOL The house absurdly thinking it can do anything without the support of the Senate and the President.
They need to come to the table and negotiate.

It makes little sense for McConnell to entertain a bill which will be vetoed and will not have the votes to overturn that veto. If you prefer to have the political spectacle of Trump vetoing bills to elected officials actually hashing out a way to get this impasse resolved then, frankly, you're more the problem than Trump or McConnell is.

So you agree with the tactic or...?

It is politics in America today

What one party does, the other turns around and does it even worse

We no longer work together....we don’t even try.....this shutdown is proof positive of that

At one time or another most of the democrats were for stronger border control....and as for the money....5.7b is a drop in the bucket of our annual budget

This is all about politics....can’t let other side win....must do everything to keep them from winning....and both sides are guilty of it

Does that answer your question

They need to come to the table and negotiate.

What's to negotiate? Trump asked for $1.6B for the wall in his budget. They gave it to him. Then the House changed it to $5.7B. Now that is the new sticking point for Trump: $5.7B for the wall, not a penny less.

In return, should the Democrats get $5.7B for climate change or something else?

Is this the "Art of the Deal"?

Sure! The Democrats should be negotiating for something in exchange for the $5.7B compromise.

I bet a lot of people wish they knew....

Never hurts to ask....it is called negotiating....something the dems are refusing to do

you don't seem to register that there was a bill before the new congress took over that would have prevented this and funded
the government and everything else and democrats filibustered that bill.

so now we stand here because of that. you are blaming the wrong people as usual.

No. This House did not approve 1.6B. Those last in control of the House approved the 5B. The Senate leader would not go along with that without Dem support.
So again.
They need to come to the table and negotiate.

I never said the House passed a bill with the $1.6B. That was the Senate based on Trump's budget request. Blame Trump for not asking for the higher amount in his budget.

You have AGAIN deceptively-edited a story and left out crucial bits of information. You do this often; there is no way it isn't intentional.

How the story actually reads from the beginning:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blocked legislation on Thursday that would have reopened most of the federal government impacted by the partial shutdown.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) tried to get consent to take up a House-passed bill that would reopen all agencies except the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which is at the center of the shutdown fight. But McConnell objected.

The Senate GOP leader didn’t explain his objection from the Senate floor, but he has warned for weeks that he will not bring up a government funding bill unless it’s the product of an agreement between congressional Democratic leadership and President Trump.

"The solution to this is a negotiation between the one person in the country who can sign something into law, the president of the United States, and our Democratic colleagues," McConnell said Tuesday when he blocked a House bill as well as a piece of legislation to fund DHS through Feb. 8.

You edited it so it seemed like he was just doing it out of pique, with no explanation, even though the explanation was right there. You did this on purpose.

It makes little sense for McConnell to entertain a bill which will be vetoed and will not have the votes to overturn that veto.

The Senate, and President Trump, should be on the record regarding ending this government shutdown, or continuing it.

Trump can take the same chance that every President takes when vetoing a bill, that it will be over-ridden by Congress.

And you wonder why Congress doesn't work. It's because of critters like McConnell who are willing to crap all over government employees in order to protect Trump from himself.

Are you a troll?

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate...ose-spending-more-than-16b-on-border-security

The Senate passed $1.6 billion in wall funding in its Homeland Security appropriations bill, in line with the White House’s original request. But Trump has since upped the ante to $5 billion, an amount the House included in its version of the spending bill.

McConnell is doing Trump’s heavy lifting, just as Reid did for Obama

Doesn’t change anything...

That bill will never see daylight...

Unless there is a coup in the senate, the rules are changed, that bill is dead

The democrats need to bring a bill to Trump that either he will sign, or (and good luck with this one) one that will get through the veto over ride

That is the option

What they put in it is up to them....until then the government stays closed
