Defense Secretary James Mattis said Saturday that Russian operatives attempted to interfere in the 2018 midterm elections, apparently confirming for the first time that Moscow attempted to meddle in last month's elections.

Mattis spoke of the relationship between the Trump administration and Russian President Vladimir Putin during an interview Saturday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California.

Well, so much for the chummy relationship between Trump & Putin. Putin's release of Cohen emails regarding Trump Tower Moscow is another sign that Vlad sees Trump as a liability.

Mattis didn't say anything about Trump's "relationships."
Nice pretzel logic you have going on there, my friend.

Putin getting involved with Cohen was indeed an interesting development.

But that's how Putin & Russia operate; they sow chaos. And Trump's the perfect target and tool. We can see how well it worked, up to now. Excellently, sadly. :(

TDS is the feeling of reality settling back into place at last. Two more years of this craziness at most.

Putin wants us fighting among ourselves. It makes him feel warm inside that drafty Kremlin.

Russia targeted Trump. It makes sense if the theory is that they targeted the 2016 election.

Rachel Maddow did a great job on her MSNBC show the other night, stitching this web of BS & intrigue & stupidity together in order for the real pattern to emerge.

I recently posted Mattis confirming that they screwed with the 2018 midterms also.

Thanks. I like her. Give me the day you're talking about, and I'll watch it.

Don't count your chickens yet.

Oh, no doubt. They may have even targeted him earlier before his campaign.

Unfortunately by his modus operandi and associations, Trump gave them a target rich environment.

That's his M.O. Chaos, and distrust. Of course by getting a compromised President in his pocket here, get even one further than he usually does. Trump was a (very) soft target.

It had to be early this past week. She has a great research team as well as a sharp mind to put all this stuff together so that it starts to make sense.

Mattis says confirms nothing.

Trump's ego & greed make him a very soft target. Look at his fat gut playing tennis. He's a walking BigMac with supersize French fries.

Uhh..he's the Secretary of Defense so I would guess he knows more than all of us about this. Or are you in denial that the Russians meddled in our recent elections? (Denial is not a river in Egypt).

Her research team is the best in the business. And once again for the past week or two, she outdrew Hannity in their shared timeslot, which is no mean feat.

Cuomo on CNN can do reasonably well when he goes to his whiteboard, too.

We recall Trump is the potus who had an unannounced meeting in the oval office with only Russians present. We and the world found out about it via the Russian media only.

The Russian ambassador and the foreign minister were present with Russian media only. It was at the meeting that Trump handed over classified information to the two of 'em. Potus has the authority to distribute classified information at his pleasure. The issue here is Trump's abuse of the authority to include the unannounced secret meeting. Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford later replied to a question from the Senate Armed Services Committee that, "Sharing intelligence with the Russians is not a good idea."

It's a good thread and topic, however, the thread title says Putin tried to "interfere" in the midterm elections. Mattis said it quite differently and good on him for it...

Mattis: Putin tried to ‘muck around’ in US midterm elections

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks to the media after the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018. Putin and Trump "said hi to each other," according to the Russian leader's spokesman, but didn't shake hands or otherwise interchange, even during the "family photo" when leaders rub elbows as they get into place and usually exchange small talk. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Saturday took aim at Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of trying to “muck around” in the U.S. midterm elections, of duplicity in arms control and of acting irresponsibly in last weekend’s naval confrontation with Ukraine.

In remarks at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, California, Mattis said the U.S.-Russian relationship has deteriorated over the last two years. “We are dealing with someone that we simply cannot trust,” he said. “There is no doubt the relationship has worsened.”

Mattis did not elaborate on his claim that Russia tried to interfere in last month’s elections, adding only, “We are seeing a continued effort along those lines.” He added more generally, “It’s his efforts to try to subvert democratic processes that must be defended.”

Mattis, in a speech at the Reagan Presidential Library and during a question-and-answer session afterward, was unyielding in his criticism of Putin. Asked how the U.S. can deter further Russian confrontation, the former Marine general placed the blame for worsening relations all on the Russian president. “Mr. Putin is clearly a slow learner,” Mattis said. “He is not recognizing that what he is doing is actually creating the animosity against his people. He’s not acting in the best interests of the Russian people, and he is actually causing NATO to rearm” — an allusion to increased defense spending by many European NATO members, as well as the conduct of bigger allied military exercises and billions of dollars in additional U.S. spending on military training and operations in Europe.

In the current atmosphere going forward I am confident Mattis position in the administration remains secure. I think Mattis feels that way too, hence his statements at this time. Still we just never know given Donald Trump is a wild and babbling ignoramus. Trump's the guy who thought chairman of JCS gets paid $5 million a year until John Kelly corrected Trump, in a report by WaPo. Officially, Trump's Boss Putin doesn't get $5 million a year.

You bet. To pull together Flynn, Cohen, Trump, his kids, Putin, the real estate deals in Moscow (including a $50M bribe to Putin), Maria Butina setting up Trump on sanctions on Russia, took a lot of effort. No wonder they pay her so much. (All the leads on MSNBC make over $1M/year). I make a point of watching her at 9PM week nights.

Ya think that's why so many Democrats won?

Net 40 Democrats won in the House to get majority control of it which is when Putin shat a brick. It's the only Bric they got over there btw cause the Brics have fallen and crashed. Shattered. Nobody in it was a model of democracy anyway. Quite the opposite.

Putin-Trump-Fanboys.

Mattis is just another seasoned propagandist for TPTB, like Brennan, Clapper and many others.
