Well, the Morman religion did borrow from some Masonic tenents and rituals.
Only, the Masons have never denied that their rituals are not meant to be taken literally. Hiram Abiff is a fictous character and the Masons have never claimed otherwise.
Masonry is a benevolent fraternity dedicated to the relief of others and the betterment of their brotherhood to become more worthy individuals. Religous and political discussions within the lodge are frowned upon as the two topics are prone to cause division and controversy. "Harmony and strength are the support of all institutions, more especially of ours."
It is religous in nature but not a religion. It matters not if you are Catholic, Baptist, Buddist, Hindu or Muslim. In the Masonic lodge, you are just another brother, equal in all respects.
Masons donate, quietly, millions of dollars each day to a plethra of charities. Many of you have heard of "Shriner's Hospitals." Did you know that you have to be a Master Mason before you can join the Shrine and become a Shriner?
There are a LOT of conspiracy theories out there regarding Masonry and nobody gets a bigger kick out of their absurdity than the Mason's do. No matter what you heard or what you THINK you know, unless you have been raised to become a Mason, believe me, you are clueless as to what they are, what they do and what they are all about.
They are so "secret" that there are no less than a zillion websites about Freemasonry and they are listed in every phonebook ever printed. Their lodges have signs as big as billboards. Now, if that's not secret, I don't know what is. :rofl Seriously, the ONLY thing secret about Freemasonry are their modes of recognition. And even that's not really a secret for curious minds. Many o' disgruntled past Masons have divulged the lodge secrets once they have been deemed unworthy and booted out of the fraternity.
Say what you will about Masons. They really don't care. All they care about is doing good deeds. Regardless of what one thinks or says about them, if their child ever gets burnt to a crisp, and has no monetary means for treatment, they might find themselves, with hat in hand, asking for Masonic relief. And they will get it too.
So mote it be.
