Margaret Doughty, Atheist Seeking U.S. Citizenship, Told To Join Church Or Be Denied

Re: Margaret Doughty, Atheist Seeking U.S. Citizenship, Told To Join Church Or Be Den

While I try to be practical, I don't think knuckling under is preferable or acceptable.

1) The individual would be gaining citizenship under false pretenses.
2) Taking citizenship trivializes the matter. (It's definitely not a huge issue, but it is an issue.)
3) Things don't get changed unless someone takes a stand.

You are right. But now whether she gets a citizenship is in question!

Re: Margaret Doughty, Atheist Seeking U.S. Citizenship, Told To Join Church Or Be Den

Atheism, as a single coherent thing, is basically a political movement right now. It is a movement of people who do not want to have their lives dictated by religious ideology. It is a movement of science, education, liberty, and peace. It opposes the imposition of bronze age philosophies on modern people, be they about rights, especially the treatment of women, the origins of the world and of our species, sexuality, and political power. Atheists do not want rules governing their lives to be based on fables supposedly told by and about gods thousands of years ago, and in defiance of modern philosophy and knowledge.

Atheism only really exists as a concept or as a movement because theism is the predominant stance in the world, and is the source of so much violence, oppression, misery, and ignorance.
