Democratic socialist New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim immigrant, identified as both Asian and African American on his Columbia University application, a report claims.
The 33-year-old checked both “Asian” and “Black or African American” on his application to the Ivy League university — which was ultimately rejected — when he was a high school senior in 2009, the New York Times reported Thursday.
Mamdani, born in Uganda, told the outlet he doesn’t identify as either race but rather “an American who was born in Africa.”
“Most college applications don’t have a box for Indian-Ugandans, so I checked multiple boxes trying to capture the fullness of my background,” the Queens lawmaker said, adding that he specified “Ugandan” in a section of the application that allowed for more detailed personal information.
Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and the Democratic Party’s newly minted candidate for mayor of New York City, found himself in some hot water last week after The New York Times reported that he claimed to be both Asian and “Black or African American” on his college application to Columbia University.
Many Black New Yorkers are not happy about that, including incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is actually Black and is running for re-election as an independent.
Adams said in a statement: “The African American identity is not a check-box of convenience. It’s a history, a struggle and a lived experience. For someone to exploit that for personal gain is deeply offensive.”
The conservative New York Post had a field day with the news, and interviewed numerous Black New Yorkers who described Mamdani as a fraud and a liar.
Oh, you mean Adams whose running against him decided to make this a thing? And this news is not going over with........ well........ real black folk in New York.
Black New Yorkers slam Zohran Mamdani over race claims on his college application
Adams who is a black man.Oh, you mean Adams whose running against him decided to make this a thing?
He is indeed, and is also running against Mamdani. The answer Mamdani provided made it clear what his thought process was, and he is an African in much the same way white South Africans are Africans too. Or do you think only black people are Africans?Adams who is a black man.
Word has it he ran with Corn Pop.In the spirit of enlightened progressivism, can't we just let the poor man identify as black?
Mamdani, in the 'hood.
Adams is just one voice. But you hold onto that.He is indeed, and is also running against Mamdani. The answer Mamdani provided made it clear what his thought process was, and he is an African in much the same way white South Africans are Africans too. Or do you think only black people are Africans?
That's not what he was trying to do, per his response. He was born and lived in Africa (Uganda and S.Africa) until he was 7. Granted, his selection was a clumsy way of trying to add his African heritage to his application, but there's nothing indicating he was trying to identify as black. In the spirit of enlightened progressivism, can't we just let the poor man identify as black?

Go ahead and believe that. He was trying to get over on the system. That's not what he was trying to do, per his response. He was born and lived in Africa (Uganda and S.Africa) until he was 7. I will, thanks, and along with the other numpties who are trying to make this a thing; it's quite comical.Adams is just one voice. But you hold onto that.

Black New Yorkers rage over Zohran Mamdani’s ‘African American’ claim: ‘He’s a fraud’
A slew of black Big Apple residents fumed Friday over mayoral front-runner Zohran Mamdani’s claim on an Ivy League college application that he is African American — with them raging the socialist pol is a “fraud” and “trickster.”
“He’s just trying to get over,” an 86-year-old Harlem resident, identifying herself only as Marjorie, said of Mamdani, a socialist of Asian Indian descent.

He's not black. The question is not one of nationality. It's about ethnicity. If it were nationality, 98% of black Americans today would need to classify themselves differently since they too were not born in Africa. That's not what he was trying to do, per his response. People who want to climb on the backs of what blacks suffered through so they could get over. Yes, says a lot about those who are "fine with it".Another thread that belongs in the "bias in media" category. While the title claims people are complaining, and quotes a few people doing that, the article also includes people who are fine with it.
He is not, which is why I stated his selection was a clumsy way for him to address his nationality. Perhaps we need a "African (Black)/African (non Black)" category. He's not black. Seems like Mamdani was trying to get someone who was actually black bumped off that year's acceptance or scholarship list.Trying to get over in the system is a problem now? Lol!
I think if this is the type of thing his opponents are focusing on, then Mamdani's campaign is probably loving it.We have another Pocahontas Sen Warren striker on our hands. Mamdani lied on his college application. Reminds me of the woman who was head of the NAACP who claimed to be black but is white as snow.
Or Senator Warren claiming to be American Indian
How come no one ever lies on their college application pretending to be white?
"Clumsy" reads like a euphemism. He is not, which is why I stated his selection was a clumsy way for him to address his nationality. Perhaps we need a "African (Black)/African (non Black)" category.

Even if he did it intentionally and maliciously and did not even have the explanation of having lived in Africa, is this really something that anybody should care about when it comes to voting for a person for office, especially post primary? Ask yourself, if Trump, or any other candidate you did support intentionally checked the wrong box at age 18 in a similar form, would that cause you to not vote for him or instead to vote for someone with completely different positions? Would you really even care?
I'm somewhat burnt out on electoral politics at the moment and have not followed this race particularly closely, but my understanding is that there are plenty of positions that Mamdani has that could be focused on instead by his opponents.
Moreover, Mamdani's emphasis of his South Asian heritage was a keystone of his campaign and helped him get a foothold in New York City's Asian and Muslim communities: “As the first South Asian elected official, the first Muslim elected official to ever run for mayor, the turnout in those same communities has been incredible to see,” he said in an interview last week. His campaign had also released ads in Urdu and Bangli, which helped him secure votes in those communities.
Meanwhile, Mamdani's most formidable opposition in the November race is likely to come for current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is black and whose moribund independent campaign to stay in Gracie Mansion has been given new life by Mamdani's radicalism and the lack of an effective challenger on the Republican side. (The GOP nominee, Guardian Angels founder and radio talk show host Curtis Sliwa, does not have governing experience nor broad appeal in the city outside of the Republican primary electorate.)
The revelation was also the subject of widespread outrage and mockery on social media platforms.
