I just saw this on MSNBC about a half hour ago. Bush on Air Force #1 halfway to Jordan, was informed by Maliki there was no point to meet. We are heading for a final confrontation for a control of Bagdad which has the potential of mushrooming out and could possibly bring in the Russians which would bring in the Chinese.

According to Joe Scarborough, this is an historical event of possible epic consequences with, for the first time, a President of the US has been snubbed leading up to a Summit meeting.

Stick this anywhere you want it! I don't have a link. I just saw it on tv. I'm sure the links will be forthcoming tomorrow.

I saw it too. It was on Scarborough Country. What's so ironic about this is that Jordan was one of the nations we sent those we kidnapped to be tortured.

Well, there is a silver lining here.

The democrats(or at least the Dem representative of my district) can't say Maliki is Bush's puppet. He is the president of a sovereign Iraq and he can do what he wants, including snubbing Bush(which I have no problem with).

A prime minister snubbing somebody isn't a sign of his country's sovereignty.

I wonder if the sudden snub had anything to do with Bush's advisor , Steven Hadley's memo that was leaked to the NYT's? .....

Steven Hadley:
"..."His intentions seem good when he talks with Americans, and sensitive reporting suggests he is trying to stand up to the Shia hierarchy and force positive change," the memo says of Maliki, according to a text posted on the New York Times website. "But the reality on the streets of Baghdad suggests Maliki is either ignorant of what is going on, misrepresenting his intentions or that his capabilities are not yet sufficient to turn his good intentions into action."....

Geez, haven't we been saying the same about Bush for the last three years and confirmed it on Nov. 7 ?

Or was the meeting canceled because of Al Sadr threatening to boycott the government in protest of the meeting?

...Five Shi'ite Muslim cabinet members and 30 legislators loyal to Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr threatened to pull support from the government if Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki went to the Jordanian capital to meet with President Bush.

A few hours after Mr. Maliki arrived in Amman, lawmakers from the movement handed out a statement at their Sadr City headquarters confirming the boycott and saying they consider the visit a provocation....read
VOA News - Iraq's Government in Crisis Over Maliki-Bush Meeting

Anyway, Bush and Maliki DID MEET for about an hour yesterday and held a brief press conference together. Nothing new was said. Blah, blah, blah..... except Maliki left the door wide open for getting help from Iraq's neighbors.

.... Bush and Maliki also met privately today and then held a joint news conference before the president's return to Washington. Bush and Maliki said they agreed to speed the training of Iraqi security forces, and they pledged to continue cooperation between the U.S. and Iraq to stem violence....read

Now Maliki has to back to Baghdad and face his political base, Al Sadr and his militia who may be boycotting his government. Wow, was that meeting worth it or what?
