Major US fuel pipeline forced to shut down after cyberattack

Colonial Pipeline said it was the ‘victim of a cybersecurity attack’ and that in response it took its systems offline.

The main fuel supply line to the US East Coast has shut down indefinitely after the pipeline‘s operator suffered what is believed to be the largest successful cyberattack on oil infrastructure in the country’s history – presenting a danger of spiking petrol prices and a fresh challenge to US President Joe Biden’s pledges to secure the nation against threats.

The attack on the Colonial Pipeline, which runs 5,500 miles and provides nearly half the petrol, diesel and jet fuel used on the East Coast, most immediately affected some of the company’s business-side computer systems – not the systems that directly run the pipelines themselves. The Georgia-based company said it shut down the pipelines as a precaution and has engaged a third-party cybersecurity firm to investigate the incident, which it confirmed was a ransomware attack. It first disclosed the shutdown late Friday and said it has also contacted law enforcement and other federal agencies.

Many of these pipelines were built around 1942 so oil shipments from TX would not have to travel by sea to the refiniries across from NYC. , a big problem with the U-boats. I used to live near one in central NJ. Vast operation over 5K miles long.

For how many years have security experts been warning about possible cyberattacks on our infrastructure now? Sheesh. Cybersecurity is the one part of our national security budget that needs to go way up.
 
All through the spring, we’ve had higher gasoline prices and spot shortages of pigments, resins, and various other petrochemical based raw materials.

And now a cyber attack on a major pipeline.

The vulnerability of the fossil fuel based infrastructure has been on full display. And the ripple effects that come from failures in that chain, which were once taken for granted, appear as vulnurabilities now.

Need proof? Home improvement contractors are now peddling Tesla walls and solar panels as stopgap measures to guard against what happed to folks in Texas just a few months ago.

Solar collector shingles for homes were a thing a few years back. A friend who has about as much money as God checked out the cost and the differential then was still too great to be justified for him.

I'm hoping the tech will be right before I need the next new roof. Maybe the southern exposure roof with the Solar and the northern expose with the regular?

The UK government have been spending big money recently on GCHQ and cybersecurity specialists because this threat is real and can be targeted at any large infrastructure.

It's a tad unfair to blame Biden given this sort of attacks demands defences that take years to develop.
You can't just hire a bunch of nerds and expect instant results it takes a vast effort with lots of people and time to just work out who's doing what and what the capabilities of the other side are.
I'd hesitate to even blame Trump for the same reason as the agencies need so much time to get going.

For this exact reason, I don't think nuclear stations (at least in Europe or the US) are linked to the internet in any way.
They use closed systems so the only way to hack them would be an actual person getting inside and uploading a program directly into the system.

I'd be amazed if any were accessible as it would seem like an obvious and hugely problematic target.

The STUXNET virus that ruined those Iranian uranium enrichment facilities was likely delivered in a thumb drive that someone found & was curious about. As soon as he stuck it in his drive the whole complex became infected with malware. An external internet connection was not needed.

Explain what Biden did, or changed to make the US unsafe from digital attack.

Oh, and while you’re at it, tell us all about how the TRump regime took action to make us safer. Particularly in the area of preventing or punishing agents of rival countries from engaging in cyber warfare.

I’ll make it easy for you. Trump not only did nothing, but he and McConnell worked hard to make sure that no legislation that might have made the culprits think twice was ever brought before a full Congress.
