Magnetic north has never sat still. In the last hundred years or so, the direction in which our compasses steadfastly point has lumbered ever northward, driven by Earth's churning liquid outer core some 1,800 miles beneath the surface. Yet in recent years, scientists noticed something unusual: Magnetic north's routine plod has shifted into high gear, sending it galloping across the Northern Hemisphere—and no one can entirely explain why.

For those that rely on paper maps, I wonder how much of a difference it will be when converting the GM angle, and if it will require new maps, or if a published magnetic angle by region will be sufficient to make the adjustment on paper?

Somehow, Trump and Russia are involved in this. I'm sure of it.

"Based on the magnetic fingerprints locked into ancient rocks, we know that over the last 20 million years, magnetic north and south have flipped roughly every 200,000 to 300,000 years (this rate has not been constant over the planet’s lifetime, though)."

If we had toilets 200,000 years ago that would have been a fun transition.

Its not a big deal its always moving around they readjust the maps as need be but unless it flips again there isn't that much of a problem

Well, it COULD be a big problem. Stock up on SPF 1000.

Magnetic poles are always shifting, it's nothing to worry about.

Only if it has to do with the destruction of life as we know it, then yeah, Trump has to have had something to do with it.
...and eating babies....Trump eats babies too, right?

There's no possible mechanism for the earth to suddenly stop being magnetic.

switching the poles can take a while (years) and that disturbs the magnetic field, allowing more solar radiation to hit the earth. Currently there are already areas that have a weakened magnetic field.

Pole switching can take hundreds of years, and while the magnetic field is perturbed, it's still there, and still functioning to more or less the same degree. Even whether the effects of an increase in solar radiation would stand out from the 'background noise' of the ill effects of modern living is up for debate.

The earth suddenly exploding could be a big problem, magnetic north is always moving. Look at old aviation charts they have the magnetic declination on them and they are not the same as todays. This isn't new

a wobble is less of a problem, but a reversal could be chaotic and dangerous. And we're due...

Shifting poles is of no concern. Now, if the magnetic field starts messing with us, THEN we should start to worry.. ;)

Tim-

What's new is the movement is four, five times faster now than it was for the last century.

I said as much in my original post you quoted

we should send Bruce Willis to nuke it back into place.

So where will Santa Claus live?

If we flip, will we be like Australia then?
